I recently changed computers, my dad took one of the laptops- the one I used.

I took down all my passwords, save one. My Passport Account/msn account password.

I changed the password recently (i have the account since 2003) and I don't remember it.

After failing to recover it with the automated services, I contacted staff.

Further to probing my ass and asking me details - to which I provided answers to the best of my ability- and following 6 emails they regret to inform me that I have not proven ownership of the account and they suggest I start a new one.

As you may realize, I m quite pissed off.

Can anyone suggest a real solution (yeah, I know some will post some irrelevant yet funny replies, but be gentle)

Start a new password retrieval request. In an operation as big as MSN's, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have the wherewithal/time to double check if you'd tried before, and the next person you deal with might be more slack. Having never been in your situation I don't know if there's a phone number you could call up for the same purpose - I doubt it, but if there was I'd give it a go as well.

have we got anyone that works for that part of MS around here (or knows someone that does)? I think that could be really helpful.

Did he format the machine? If not, your log in should still be on that computer...

no he hasn't. He's not very PC-able my father though, however I ve sent him an email with the appropriate application to reveal the password. I hope this goes through the way it should.

Yes it's all Microsofts fault you can't rememeber your password and failed to answer the questions which you gave answers to in the event you forget your password and need to recover your account.

I think microsoft should be praised for keeping their security so random person x can't ring out say "I forgotten my password, can you give it to me", 'Yes sure it is....'.

Next time use passwords that you will vaguely remember, better still enter them manually all the time that way you will never forget the bastards.

I mean if your bank gave your online banking password to random people who vaguely know your transaction details you would blast the bank for it's lax security. So shut up moaning and write an apology to microsoft.

    Agreed.

...Why should Microsoft compromise their policy for idiots?

Thank you for your kind words.

Since you have chosen to take the offensive route, open your eyes to the following, also posted above:

    Additionally:

My hotmail account, made in 2003, is full of SPAM. I have changed 5 different countries since then and I rarely input my REAL name/last name for run-off-the-mill e-mail services such as Hotmail. That's called smart, not idiotic.

Microsoft staff are the stuborn idiots because:

I have given them detailed background information and time logs of events relating to my account, previous passwords, social networks utilising the account, e-mails within the account, e-mails of people on my contact list etc and they still "cant confirm the identity" for reasons they can't disclose "for my own good".

Implying that I am an idiot doesn't really help me, and doesn't really make your image any better, considering you have twice my age and still choose to post offensively. I don't mind people considering me an idiot since everyone is entitlted to their own opinion, but this isn't the appropriate thread to express such views =)

Can't really blame them then, if you give them false details that you have forgotten.

Actually, most of that detail is irrelevant. The people you were talking to on the phone don't have the ability to look into your account and see your emails, or address book, etc... So if you've faked/forgotten the details actually used to retrieve passwords, well you're a bit stuck :(

It's interesting that your secret question has been 'corrupted'. I verified and my hotmail account (from 2000ish) still has a valid question. I guess you just got some bad luck :(

I don't really think you should go calling them idiots though, that's a bit unfair :)

They specifically asked me to mention contacts, emails etc, and the form also contains a space for extra "irrelevant" as you say, proof. take a look here: https://support.live.com/default.aspx?productKey=wlidvalidation

    You

    a) threatened to go down there and punch his / her lights out if they didn't do what you asked.

    b) threaten to sue them for squillions of dollars for your hurt feelings and inability to check your emails from big-strong-men.com

    c) pleaded with them, even crying a little saying you are expecting an email from a relative on his / her death bed

    d) got someone with two brain cells

Barc0de: you are not an idiot. But you do make me irritated bigtime, sometimes. And you can even make me pissed off. But in reality, you are not an idiot. And if I have said that in a former post, then it must have been said in anger or in some context I can´t remember.
