It's a horizontal shmup, so I can see how it'd be adaptable to platforming. Add gravity, make the player able to control the scrolling left and right instead of forcing scrolling etc. Also, if you haven't played Sturmwind, you really should! It's one of few homebrew titles I'd say is worth of being up against a real commercial game title.
I kind of suck at schmups, but I might give it a shot if I can find a copy! For the engine, I can see what you mean, but it's still quite the modification.
Hah yeah I suck at them too, but I do give them a go sometimes since they're easy to pick up and play with little time investment
Yeah it was a beautiful Shmup, and really impressive they were able to convert their custom engine for a side scrolling hack and slash game.
