Towards the end of GDC, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto revealed they had been toying with the concept of Mii creation for almost 20 years but were never able to turn it into much of anything. It finally found a home on the Wii, but a recent developers confrence uncovered an early screenshots of the Mii editor on the DS which was ment to come with the handheld when it launched. The idea doesn't seemed to have changed expect the graphics.
i was shocked that the n64's Mario Artist created characters (and stage debut to a lesser extent) beat the pants out of Miis. Miis are definately designed to be carried over to less capable systems.
It wasn't the carrying over so much as it was the "ease of use." The idea being that the more complex the software, the better the final character however the fewer people there are that cancomfortably use it. By reducing the complexity of the characters created, the learning curve was drastically reduced. -hl718
