I have found out how to put my MD player back together :).

It's working better than it was. I cleared off a bunch of dust on the keypad, which is probably what was causing the "forward" key go back two tracks. I'm still wondering what the grinding noise is. I wonder if the rail thing the laser slides on is not lubricated enough? I'm not really knowledgeable on these sorts of things, so any help is appreciated.

Also, the thing was left out in my car for a few weeks, so I'm wondering if heat got to it in any way.

Yeah, rail delubrication is a common problem. I think you need some silicon-based lube for that, and otherwise there is sci.electronics.repair :)

Where would I go about buying that, and how much do I apply? Do I put it on the whole rail (about an inch's worth)?

I have no idea - I just read about it on that newsgroup, but haven't used the stuff myself. I should though, with all the half-working Saturns and PSXes around here...

It did nothing :(. Maybe the spindle is the messed up piece? Also, "grinding" isn't the right word. "Rattling" would be more appropriate - you can actually feel the thing vibrating in your hand. :(

Maybe one of the "teeth" on the gear that moves the laser in its little rail is broken. The mechanism that turns around for the laser to work could also be stuck somewhere, twirling around but staying in the same place, causing "cracking" noise and not moving.

The discs will read 80% of the time. Sometimes it will show up as "NoDisc" or "Error". I'm not sure if anything is broken, but maybe just out of place? I don't know - I don't really have any knowledge when it comes to this stuff. At least I'm not hurting anything more by trying stuff, right? ;)

I still recommend you to take a look at that newsgroup, or at it's FAQ (google for it)
