Do you remember when you saw a photo of a (then) soon to be released console, and you'd end up wondering just how big that thing is in reality? Well, I always thought the game boy advance would end up being as big as the sega game gear. In fact, when I saw the actual console and held it in my hands for the first time, I was so stunned by its small size that I wondered if it wasn't a fake, until my friend put "castlevania: circle of the moon" inside it and switched the console on. Has this ever happened to any of you? Imagine what my reaction would've been...
not that much. the old ones (end 80s, beginning 90s) were just naturally big (except the GB), due to the technology at that time. but when the GBA was announced, there already existed a bunch of newer color devices like the NCPC or WSC as well the GBC, so i wasn't anymore expecting a sledge hammer like the lynx ;-) in contrary, when they announced the GB Micro, i couldn't imagine its real small size until i've seen one in real.
The Dreamcast seemed small to me, and the N64 just seems dinky in real life compared to how I would imagine it to be..
i had a couple of friends over who for their first time played dreamcast and one of them said "i always thought the dreamcast had ps1-like graphics, but those are more like ps2"
when i first played the N64(not mine,a friends one) in my memory it was a huge controller, and a really small console, cartridges were also big in my memory,i was like 7 at the time
Was the same with me, i remember when my friend got one not long after they came out and when i saw the box i thought WOW it must be really small for a next-gen console and then as soon as he opened up a the box as well as game case i was like WOW again because i hadn't really known that it was going to be that small or that the games were going to be on small 8cm discs. I was kinda the oposite with the original ps2 and xbox becuase i though the ps2 was going to be a smallish size but didn't realise is was a big as what it turned out to be and with the xbox i new it was big but i hadn't counted on it being that big and heavy, also it wasn't untill after getting a ps2 slim that i realised it was big.
When I moved my original Xbox, I finally realized it's so heavy it can hurt my cat. Which is why you don't combine game systems in high places and a cat's curiosity. :banghead:
I remember looking at the castlevania gba cartridge back in 2001 and joking with my friend about how they'd soon make smaller, square cartridges...
You know that thing on the bottom of the NES that came off? Some idiot said if you removed it it could play master system games. He also insited at the time that Mega Man IV was an SNES game. For years I had the misconception the N64 sucked. when I was only half right..the system rocked the controller is what sucked.
When I got my PC Engine in the mail I was rather shocked at how small it was. Somehow expected that it would be about the size of a Genesis 2, but that thing is f-ing tiny!
I was also very shocked how small both the n64 and gc were when they came out. But gba cartridges were a big shock. I just couldn't believe they held more information and were so small.
I never thought PCE is so damn tiny until a friend showed a comparsion pic... same goes for Xbox... damn that one is huge
Only the Saturn. I remember seeing pictures of the first grey Japanese units in Mean Machines and CVG and it looked incredibly slick. Then when the UK version game out I was very disappointed. It looked thinner in the pictures and not as large, and the plastic looked expensive. Reality was a huge black block with cheapo plastic casing.
in the time that game consoles were synonimous to "toys", I think the Saturn made a good case for itself. I actually love the design of the black and white Saturns. The carved lines in that block have a sexiness that the DC lacks in my view, so I even like the design more than the DCs. That said the prize goes to the N64. I just can't think of a prettier games' console. It wasn't big, nor tiny. The plastic was solid, the design was obviously thought-out and the rounded legs were just asking for a Disk Drive to be fitted underneath - I remember wanting a Disk Drive before I ever knew what a Disk Drive was. The design just made so much sense and the DD complemented it perfectly! Another misconception was that the Playstation had "better graphics" than the N64. People here in Greece would rave on and on about that one despite the in-game quality being evident as daylight.
I strongly disagree. The N64 design is WORSE than the Saturn in my opinion. It is ruined by the front 'feet' and the grey controller ports.
fair enough, nintendo was all for colour coordination back in those days though. It was about the same time that they released colored variates to their handhelds and the same plastic was used to make the coloured n64 controllers. The PSX and Saturn were boxy, mystical designs. The N64 was a games console and it showed.
I thought you could install a DVD burner on the xbox. The right side of the DVD drive looks like you could install one...at least it did when you were 13.
i can't imagine an XBOX when I was 13. The n64 is as good as it gets when you're 13. Your eyes can't see better than an n64 when you're 13.
