Yeah, I know you guys are probably sick of me and my PC now. Anyway, before I formatted drive C: it used to be a 8 Gig drive split in to C: & E: drives. C: drive being 2 gig just for windows and E: drive being 6 gig for software with drives D & H both being different 40 gig drives for storage. Anyway Drive E: (originally a partition on the same drive as C has vanished after the Windows XP install. Drive C; is still 2 Gig like it always was but what happened to drive E: ? That's missing ! pluss it has some important photos as well as back up software such as Nero and so on. Is there anyway to get the new installed XP to read this partition? I sure hope so. Yakumo
Hi, im new here so you may not know me so hello everyone. On your partitions the new one will be ntsf and depending on what your old os was the one missing maybe fat32. I dont know weather XP will read a FAT32 partition or not, I have never tryed. Even if it wont you could always just slave out the Fat32 one to a older computer thats running 98 or some other OS. Then take your stuff off of it and make it a ntsf and put that stuff back on it. If that dosent make any sense please re-describe the problem in a little more detail and I will see if I can help you out more. Good luck and hello everyone. (been watching the site for a whiles now ^^) EDIT: Also when you installed XP you may have had to erase both partitions on C and then make a new partition useing all your space on that drive. In Xp when you look at that drive how large is the part you can see? Is it 2 gb or 8gb? That will tell you if your data still exists on it or not. Ok, my bad you said it was 2 gb. Then your data should still be in tact on the other 6 gb of the drive. Like I said your best bet to try is to slave the drive out in a older computer with a older os on it and take the stuff you want off of it. There may be a way to make XP find the partition but I have never tryed anything like that so I cant say for sure.
Thanks for the idea Micjohvan. Win XP can read fat32 since it reads the D: drive wich is Fat32 (e: drive is NTSF anyway). I'll try to make it a bit more clearer. Old PC set up had Win XP and a 8 gig harddrive that was split in to two partitions (C & E drives) which were both NTSF. I had a problem with XP so I had to format partition C: and reinstall XP. Now XP does not see partition E: anymore. It thinks that the whole drive is only C: and only 2 Gig in size. So the E: partition which is 6 Gig is missing. Yakumo
control panel->administrative tools->computer management->disk manegement. There you can see all connected drives and you may have some options to make windows recognize it again. The actual names on the folders and tabs might be different but I'm not using an English version of the OS so I'm not sure what they should be.
Hi Mate, Sounds like an annoying problem, it seems that you have done the right thing reinstalling Windows XP over your old C: partition, did the XP installer mentionned your E: partition as well when you were at the partition selection screen? I don't know what went on your old installation, it may be possible that you lost your Master Partition Table on your drive hence Windows not seeing the partition. Check here for some explanations: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/structMBR-c.html What you could try is to go in Control Panel click on Administrative tools icon in there go to Computer Management you will be presented with a window on the left select in Storage, Disk Management there you should be able to see all your partitions, change drive letters, format, partition, careful though it lets do a lot of thing that you may not want. If your partition isn't showing then your Master Partition Table is gone/corrupted and the fact you reinstalled Windows might not help but... You may find some tools on the net to save your precious data, google these keywords: Restore Master Partition Table I had a quick browse but I can't certify you it'll work, be careful before taking any actions and before downloading any software check each of them to see which is close to your problem. Hope this helps Sabre 470
Thanks for all the help guys. I found the E: drive without any name but winXP couldn't read it so I ended up having to re-format it. Strange really since the partition was still there yet had no lable. Yakumo
My Windows XP has done something along those lines before. I had to update to Service Pack 2 to be able to view an extra 20 GB of HD space. Even when I Clean installed with a regular XP CD, my HD only displayed 131 GB of space, but when I clean installed with an XP with SP2 CD, it showed the full 160 GB...
