I know this may be a dumb topic, but was there theoretically a chance to make a MMO/MMORPG for either Sega Saturn or PS1? (I know that PS1 didn't have an internet connection aside from that Lightspan thingy, but let's just say that theoretically it had). I know that Sega Saturn died quickly, but since it had an internet connection, I reckon that the idea at least crossed someone's mind. But let's just say that an MMORPG was made for either Sega Saturn or PS1. How do you imagine it would look like, considering the limitations of the hardware?
Yeah, but it's a shame that there wasn't even a ''failed experiment with a small loyal following'' released.
I'd imagine they'd make it similar to how .hack//fragment for the PS2 turned out. it was not really an MMO but an RPG that revolved around its 3 player online co-op and tried to emulate the feel and mechanics of a real MMO. I'd imagine an offline game with an idea based around that concept would've made a pretty neat ps1 game.
Could be possible and very simple, but it just wasn't popular. Nobody could imagine that at the time. The head-to-head was the reality in PCs (and in the Saturn). You have PSO on the Dreamcast some years later. Marketed as an online console with modem, keyboard, mouse... Remember that lot of people played online for the first time with the Dreamcast and not with a PC. Not really the case for almost everybody on this forum.
You're talking about pre-Internet technology (when it came out), and asking if an online game was possible. There WAS NetLink on Saturn. The gameplay wasn't connecting to a server as you know it now, though - so technically, no. Did the PlayStation even have network connectivity?
I've been wanting a Saturn and a Net Link for a while once I heard it still works with direct dial. I've never heard of an online service for the PS1. There is an official Sony PlayStation Link Cable that connected 2 PS1s together like the link cables for Game Boys. If there was an online service, it probably tricked the PS1 into thinking the Link Cable was connected to another PS1 when it was actually a Dial-Up connection over the Internet.
I said, considering the hardware limitations. I already said that PS1 didn't have an internet connection, aside from that Lighstpan thing, which the general public didn't have the access to.
If you're thinking something like PSO DC, I'd say it wouldn't work with the PS1. Dreamcast PSO was already pretty minimal as it is, I can only imagine a more minimal version of that with more fog. Now, maybe something like online 2D games would work, say Bomberman or something! Totally feasible, even for today, I'd love to see someone undertake a project like that. EDIT: Looked into doing it myself, nope! More difficult than I'd have hoped since im limited in my coding.
If I recall correctly I read somewhere on this board about a rare and equally expensive, public beta disc for an online RPG or something. Guess that's the closest it will get MMO-wise for Saturn.
P.S. Is this the game you were talking about? https://www.assemblergames.com/foru...on-s-Dream-for-Sega-Saturn-any-hack-attempted
If I remember correctly, in 1995. there were plans for PlayStation Modem and HDD... This addons where quickly scrapped...
Well, they already had MUDs on text-only systems decades before PS1 and Saturn, so it would've definitely been possible. Maybe not a 3D world, but something along the lines of Ultima Online would've been feasible.
This is the first 3D MMO ever released. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N5VtGVmvxU Can anyone see something like ''The Realm Online'' running on any of these hardware's? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGP_bnwV3CU
There is a Saturn Bomberman that works online (and can use up to 10 players too), but it's hella expensive. I'm not sure how many players can play online (only from two systems, since it's direct dial), but you can theoretically have 10 on one console. Back to the OP, given the hardware limitations, as well as the fact that the Saturn Netlink was only a 28.8k modem (we'll assume the Playstation would have something similar), about the only thing I could imagine working with little enough lag to function would be a MUD like 7Force suggested.
