    Good day,

recently I got the idea of modchipping my old Ps2, for fun of the project, and so I can play imported games and of course backups as I have treated my video games very poorly as a teenager and quite a lot of them don't work properly anymore.I have a scph 39004 which from my research is a V7 or V8.

    *for tl;dr version scroll down*

So I started my research and here is what I've gathered:

-Infinity modchips are the most popular
-V1.93 was the last official infinity firmware version
-Modbos are infinity modchip clones which are cheaper and basicly work just as well
-Modchips with the V1.93 firmware are hard to come by these days.
-V1.99 is an inofficial firmware that has very mixed opinions.

I've searched a lot and could only roughly find as much:
I've found a lot of forum posts with people saying that the V1.99 often "causes problems" or "doesn't work properly" but never anything specific and there are quite a few people generally opposed to them.
Others say that they work just aswell and that there is virtually no difference to the V1.93.

My conclusion was that I wouldn't want to risk getting a V1.99 chip and run into trouble for it.

So I've found a website which happens to be a german vendor and the chips are also shipped from germany which was fortunate for me who is from germany.

Although there was no specification about the firmware version in the description but the Modbo 750 arcticle had a picture where the V1.93 was edited in in the corner which was suggesting for me that he's offering the 1.93 ones and it was so you could read it better.

You can see for yourself if you want to:

*This is not a promotion, the link is only for the purpose of stating my case*(Right now I wouldn't even recommend it because see below)
    http://www.voss-tronic.de/index.php/3/5/konsolen/spielstation-2/modbo-750.html

So I ordered that one, the package arrived today and it's clearly saying V1.99 in the corner of the chip.

Right now I'm conflicted if I should ask for a refund or an exchange for a chip with a proper version(if available) or if I should try my luck with the chip I got.

There for I wanted to ask if anyone had any concrete information about the V1.99 and opinions if I should return it or not. Does anyone have proper experience with the V1.99 and there "problems"? If they run stable with some minor incompatible features I can probably live with that but if they have like random crashes or even endanger my poor ol' PS2(more than a regular modchip would) that would be kinda unpleasent.

The chip came in a sealed ESD bag which I haven't opened yet incase I decide to return it.

This is my first modchip installment so I'd like to properly know what I'm getting in for.

    tl:dr

First time modding a ps2, I have a scph 39004(which is a V7/V8?). I thought I was ordering a Modbo 750 with V1.93 Firmware but instead received one with V1.99 written on it. Read some bad feedback over the 1.99 chips and would like to know if I should be worried that it won't work properly or even damage my ps2(more than a regular modchip would) ->if I should try my luck with it or ask for a refund/exchange for one with the proper V1.93 version.

I sell 1.93 chips for £6 + shipping, for future reference.

"Quality Control" is all over the place with chips you can buy from vendors these days. Basically it's random what you get but it will be a clone.
I'd take @Bad_Ad84's offer. At least you know what you get :)

I will keep that in mind, I've already read through enough to know that Bad_Ad84 is a well trusted seller here :) . For now I've come to the decision that I'm going to try my luck with the chip I got at hand. Worst case will be I fry my ps2 or the modchip. From there it could pretty much only be that the chip works or that it doesn't work and if it doesn't I already have all the wiring in place and can replace it with a proper one, purchased from Ad. I'll get to soldering right away, will let you know how it goes

I installed some 1.99s some years ago.

Worked fine on older consoles, had issues on newer slims if I recall correctly.

I suspect you won't have any issues.
