What is a FRAM modded saturn?

 

Saturn's have a SRAM chip for save game storage that is battery backed by the coin cell battery in the back. If you swap the SRAM chip for a FRAM chip (a data storage chip that retains data when power is lost), you don't loose your saves when the battery goes dead.

I think you'll still want a fresh coin cell battery installed though. It runs the RTC if I recall correctly...

Yes, it does run the RTC so you'll either want to keep them fresh or set the clock every boot. The RTC is the power hungry side of things so it isn't the fault of the SRAM it gets wiped quickly. But with FRAM installed you won't ever have to worry about it or deal with carts for backing things up, obviously.

Comsetically? Something between 7-8 without looking at it again. Probably closer to 9.

Random idea, but you did ask about some work.

Have you ever attempted to "repair" modchips? I have an X3 that doesn't work. The console works when I swap out the X3 for a different one. When the faulty one is used, the xbox just tries to boot repeatedly. Quick restarts take place. The LED's on the X3 light up each attempt. I call that chip my "blinkin" X3. *shrug*

Instead of just finding another, I'd rather spend the money to learn what is wrong. Hopefully that knowledge could be used years later to fix another.
