SO I wanted to region mod my japanese 1998 dreamcast to have a pal logo. I solder everything perfectly and attached switches but for some reason I can only change video mode and default language not swirl color. When the 12volt mod didn't work I decided to add a switch to r422 ,but alas no luck. Can someone shed some light on my predicament. Also I have a modchip installed if that helps.
It's in the BIOS. You need to either pull it, edit in a hex editor, or get the proper BIOS and put it on a flashable chip. Either way you will need to replace the chip with a flashable one so it would be easier to get the BIOS you want flashed on it. The swirl can't be changed in hardware alone. It's in the BIOS.
No, its not in the bios. Its stored in the flash, which is writable (once you apply 12v mod to temp unprotect those sectors anyway).
An suggestions? I guess if I can't get this to work I'll see if ape has time now to build me a custom dreamcast. I don't think he will since this is mid term time in college. Also I removed the battery on the controller board completely. I don't think that would do anything but, its worth mentioning.

I can give you pics since my camera apparently sucks. Just trust me my soldering is the issue. Anyway, I did note the previous owner solder some kynar from c207 to a point below it. ju
I had the same issue, it was stuck in the japan region, then I tried the latest DC Shell and it changed.
that previous owner thing wasn't that by default. That are just some hotfixes, my 1998 Japanese DC has the same thing. And just follow mmmonkey's method, that should just work perfect. I doubt your solder skills suck that much
Pictures of your work. Dont care if its "its not my soldering" - second set of eyes helps, your soldering might be perfect and its just the wrong spot. But not posting a picture and saying its nothing to do with that isnt getting you anywhere.
Sorry for the late reply. I wasn't able to get my camera to focus , Its just as well because I can't do all the mods I want to it anyway.
