Well after playing the ps2 port of virtua fighter 2 it doned on me id love to play the original arcade one, now it shows it up pretty often on ebay, however i was wondering would it work fine with a super gun? I know it might be a stupied question but the thing is i did read that most sega model games used a medium resoloution monitor, so would it work with a super gun or no?
well, it would work with a super gun (using a special jamma adapter), it just wouldnt work with a standard tv set, thats the problem. there are a few vga monitors out there that can handle that resolution, my suggestion would be a "nec multisync 3d", that one can handle almost everything, really awesome for a testing rig. unfortunately, its quite uncommon nowadays, due to its age. plus, these model2 boards are quite bulky and they use a variety of connectors for sound, video and input(unlike jamma, where one connector carries everything), quite uncomfortable to set up or to swap boards. my suggestion would be to pick up a medium res cab (some can be had rather cheap, like war gods, for example. i own that myself and its quite nice.) and use that instead. the coolest med-res cabs are the sega naomi ones, of course, but they tend to be expensive.
i see, looks like i have to go to the expensice route, its funny i only once in my lifetime actually seen a dedicated virtua fighter 2 arcade and can you belive of all places..........right outside a taco shop??????????????? Well anyway thanks for the advice it looks like i do have to get a medium res cab, though i do have an nec multisync lcd 1765 which is extremely nice, i doubt its worth the money and trouble to get a supergun with special adaptor and hook it up to the monitor when a cab and board would be much cheaper. I'm pretty sure the supergun can handle the 22khz signal.... it's just that the monitors can/can't. As long as you have a hookup from the gun to the 22khz-friendly monitor, you should be okay.
yeah, i think the supergun isnt the problem. however, you'd have to make a custom adapter to connect a vga monitor to your supergun and you'd have to make a custom model2->jamma adapter aswell, so you could basically skip the supergun alltogether, wire an at/atx power supply along with joyboards, sound and video output to your model2 board and be done with it. however, when i said nec multisync 3d, i really meant that specific model. nec has a whole range of displays called multisync, from 80ies crts to todays lcds/tfts. of the nec multisync product line, the multisync 3d is the ONLY one that accepts sync signals as low as 22khz to my knowledge. im sure there are other ones out there, but these are really in the minority, cause theres usually no use for syncing lower than 31khz in normal computer monitors.
I'm not sure if it's worth the bother. I bought a Model 2 VF2 board on ebay a year ago with exactly the same purpose, but the lack of JAMMA connector or any documentation on the pinout (that I could find), as well as the 24khz thing put me off. Ah well, it certainly is one interesting mofo to look at It's got more chips than a server park!
