I just recently upgraded my Super GT (SCUD RACE) twin to Super GT Plus. One of the things that I first noticed was that there was a new sequence in the attract mode. This sequence seems almost like a tech demo as it features a car that is not in the game. This car is shown tearing down the street with everything that it passes disintegrating to polygons in it's wake. The car has "CPU POWER" written on it's lower door and there is heavy use of reflections on the car surface. The only other thing that ties it to the game is that the car drives through the colosseum from the expert track. The colosseum shudders as the car bursts through before finally collapsing into thousands of polygons. The weird part is that this footage is noticably grainy in parts, almost looking like a Youtube vid. This is in stark contrast to the rest of the game, which is crystal clear. I don't recall ever seeing this footage anywhere before, but it doesn't make sense that SEGA would make a tech demo for an arcade board. Is this just early game footage, or something else? Any info would be appreciated. BTW, Here's the thread I made on KLOV about the upgrade if anyone's interested.
Interesting. Can you tell if it's a video or if it's in realtime? It's difficult to say based on the screenshots. Of course, you know that Super GT was used as a basis for a DC tech demo that was showed to many magazines, investors, etc. It could be related to that.
Yeah, the DC tech demos were the first thing that I thought of when I saw this. I just don't remember ever seeing SEGA make a tech demo for an arcade board. It definitely looks like video footage. There's too many artifacts/pixellation for it to be realtime. Edit: Another thing to consider is that this upgrade was release in 1997, so the footage is probably from sometime in 1996.
Guys, sorry to be a downer but this is nothing new. It is a Model 3 tech demo and was shown at the Tokyo arcade show and even at E3 once (Maybe '96). I have a video of this tech demo on a VHS some where. I always thought it was real time though. Yakumo
My guess is that it was actually running on Model 3 hardware at one point, but they decided to just make a video of it for the actual release because it was easier or cheaper. Anyway, I've always been a fan of Super GT/Scud Race, so I'd love to see that video if you could post it.
Not a downer at all Yakumo. I'm just glad to get confirmation on this. I didn't think that it was some grand discovery because, well, it is in a released (albeit obscure) arcade game. Yeah, I plan on posting some videos as soon as I get the proper cable for my cam. Thanks for the info all.
I've played this version in the UK in the past. I loved the special theme track, but it's a shame you can't take those cars onto the other tracks IMO. CVG covered the upgrade in an issue around the time it was released, if you're interested - unfortunately my huge stash of CVG issues were destroyed in a move so I can't tell you the issue number or provide scans. I believe there are a few more unlockable bonuses in the game too, but my memory is sketchy. Night mode? Something like that.
Great game. Shame never had a console port. Sega could raise millions porting some games. This, Emergency Call Ambulance, Daytona USA (both arcade versions), and many others.... And it's disgusting they don't seem to be planning a home port of After Burner Climax.
Well, there's a course from SCUD Race to be found in the Xbox conversion of OutRun 2... if that counts!
kudos to sumo for the conversions, but those scud race tracks are a shame these games better stay in arcade where they belong, because never will exist a 100% port, there's no such thing as 100%port arcade is the real deal, for me consoles will always be 2nd place
Sadly, I agree. The biggest issue for me is that regardless of how well the port is carried out, you simply can't replicate the feeling of playing these games in a proper cab.
That's true, but it's better than nothing for those of us who can't afford to buy arcade cabs and don't live near a decent arcade. Besides, a port doesn't have to be 100% to be really great. VF4 for the PS2 isn't a perfect conversion, but many people consider it to be one of the best 3D fighters of all time. Also, some arcade ports are near perfect, like espgaluda for example.
