This thread is a breeding ground for SPAM: http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11159 Leads me to ask a few questions: 1: Why is guest posting aloud in the Japan! Japan! forum? 2: What good is a forum feedback forum if normal useres can't post messages in it? That's like a suggestion box w/ no slot for putting suggestions in.
You're probably not aware of this but we've deleted over 15 posts by that prick under various names in that "American Games in Japan# thread alone. The latest two are now gone. We'll have to get ASSEMbler to delete their accounts. however they just keep making new ones so it's time for an IP ban I think. You can't post messages in the forum feedback section? Hmm, I'll see if why can get that sorted. You make a very good point there. Yakumo
I have cleared out the older spam messages that weren't deleted. I wasn't following that thread so didn't see them.
lmao! I like the way the reason has been upgraded from spam to wanker with spam! *edit* Seriously, though... I'm not really surprised. We've done well to keep the forums fairly spam-free. Of course, with such a specialised topic, we will get the odd few lurkers, haters and imposters. Actually, having said that, 754 of the 1463 users are 0 posters, some of those have been registered for over a year even. Quite a vast proportion don't even seem capable of reading an e-mail and clicking the link contained within! I wonder whether we should have privileges for members - e.g. the marketplace be readable by members only, and perhaps other areas with juicier info. I'm not saying we should be elitist - but if someone is interested in reading up on something on the site, the least they could do is say hi! Then there could be a periodic spring clean of 0 post members. If anything, it keeps the database size a lil smaller - and probably the bandwidth!
I *think* VBulletin comes with some type of privledge system that you refer to. PHPBB doesn't (out of the box) which kind of sucks for my forums. I get a few spammers, and they're not bots, unfortunately.
Both have pretty good mods, although I guess you do sorta get a bit more support within the vBulletin community. I know you can do it with vBulletin, and I'm pretty sure I've done it with phpBB too. You can certainly set a forum to be only visible by users of a certain group. You can also set it to assign groups per number of posts, I believe in phpBB as well as vBulletin. Talking of spammers, is it possible to TOTALLY delete posts here? The rules forum is full of deleted posts, and it looks very cluttered!
We really rely on users reporting things to us, most of us have day jobs and cant be surfing the boards 24 hours a day. At the rate new posts are made here that would be a fulltime job checking EVERY topic. Its up to you guys to use the report feature (Marsil is almost the only one who does) for this kinda stuff. Also you miss things such as: We do get to things, but you really cant expect us to spot things immediately. I didnt realize non mods could see deleted topics, Ill see if kev can setup a spam forum so we can throw those topics in there.
Hehe, I'm tickled by the fact that four mods chimed in so fast on this topic. I guess I'll have to make a point in the future to use the "Report Bad Post" button. It's just sort of inconspicuous--it took me a minute to find just now...but I'll try to keep it in the back of my noggin.
I don't... but those particular ones were there for quite some time. I just thought it warranted a heads' up.
Certainly it does, but I usually dont hop into the Japan forum myself, Very rarely. In such a non descript topic title for spam, its kinda hard to have to check every topic on the forum whenever it gets a new post heh. Sorry if I cam off harsh! But also, we hopped in quick because of the thread title XD Its certainly an attention getter!
Gaijin, I just had a look. You CAN do that with phpBB out of the box, well sorta. Create a forum. Then go to permissions, edit the permissions for that forum, and set it to registered (hidden). Then only registered users will see the forum! There's probably a way to deny them access, too... just haven't played.
He is right. Posting Rules You may not post new threads You may post replies You may not post attachments You may edit your posts Could we get that sorted, please? Completely pointless forum, otherwise!
I was actually hoping for some type of rank system. IE -- you have to reply to 10 posts before you can post your own. I'm assuming spammers will register, try to post, get rejected, and then quit & cower. Just an idea. I know Vbulletin has this in some form, as they use it at next-level.com forums (yes, I post there on occasion).
