I have just recently modified a Sega Mega Drive (Model 1 - UK) and installed a 50/60Hz Switch and a ENG/JAP Switch, as well as opening up the cartridge slot for Jap games. The switches are working fine, but there seems to be a strange problem when i start the console in 50Hz mode then switch to 60Hz during a game, the screen 'rolls' and doesn't stop, at the same time, the audio plays really slow. Is this normal?

If i start in 60Hz mode, i can switch to 50Hz and back to 60Hz all day long without any wierd screen problems. It only seems to happen when i start in 50Hz. It's not much of a problem, but makes playing newer region-locked games a pain to play as i have to start in 60Hz then quickly to 50Hz then back to 60Hz once loaded to get it to display in full screen!

    Anyone else have this problem?

It depends on what games you're playing.
Some load PAL optimizations, if at boot they think a 50hz console is being used. Try using game genie or action replay codes to immediately start with 60hz. Sonic 3 acts this way.

For cheap enough games I'd look into buying US versions and save the trouble.

Still region switch while on, has its uses. Much quicker than entering codes every time you play a cartridge. Games like 6-Pak and US Streets of Rage 2 hide Japanese differences behind the lockout screen.

There's various fun time waster stuff to try. NBA Jam music plays extra fast if switched into 60hz! I've also mentioned Mega Drive supports dual language Master System games.
