This is actually a Hong Kong model. I bought an identical unit on Ebay recently, also being classified as Japanese by the seller, so I thought it was a Japanese model. Its a HK unit, but has the NTSC-J region coding. A true Japanese Dreamcast has a sticker that looks like this. http://imageshack.us/f/804/kgrhqzo4e9cepfmkbpp7fiv.jpg/ I thought my Model 0, metal fanned "Japanese" unit was strange when the bottom sticker had only English, no Japanese at all. I also got an American "Model 0" unit which has a manufacture date of May 1999 and has security torx screws, whereas all my other Dreamcasts have had regular philips screws. I have heard these units were given out as rentals by either Blockbuster or Hollywood video shortly before its launch in September 1999. I guess that's why those special screws were there. I believe what's being said of Model 0 Dreamcasts having the superior Yamaha vs Samsung GD-ROM drives. My Hong Kong and May 1999 Dreamcast have no problem reading all of my backup Dreamcast games. However, my Model 1 Dreamcast cannot read a couple of them, only saying "Please insert game disc" at the menu.
