Just reading some comments on Youtube for this tune from the mighty Rob Hubbard:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EcgruWlXnQ

"This game was actually released for the NES in Japan for the Disk System, and the music was arranged by Kazuo Sawa. Though, the word 'arranged' should be replaced with 'butchered'." (Doommaster1994)

    I had no idea!

Has anyone here played it - or a link to some kind of box art?

yup- i've played it. As a huge fan of the original it was all a bit... weird. It's literally a person called monty, bearded etc. on a jail break. still has the item select but it's effectively a completely new game, just bears the same name and has the (butchered) Hubbard music on title screen.

Monty no doki doki daidassou : Monty on the run (モンテイのドキドキ大脱走 : Monty on the Run) is it's equivalent title - there were a few other weird titles brought over from 8-bit by Jaleco too. Knightlore, potty pigeon - a few others.
