Found a few nice picture of some more Nintendo proto or concept designs. First up is what was then called VR Boy which came to be the Virtual Boy

How about a concept Ultra 64 that takes special discs as well as carts and just take a look at that pad. Something tells me that someone was watching a little too close to Nintendos designs.

the ultra 64 looks allot like the famicon... even the cartridge slot. and actually it isn't really strange that the gamepad looks allot like the playstation controller... becouse sony and nintendo DID work together on the cd addon for the snes....

I like it better than the production N64. Where do you find all these cool pics?

that n64 looks a loy like the original Nintendo Playstation, not the one that made it to the stores, hence the pad resemblance...

mag mocup or true nintendo r and d design?????

Yeah I think Assembler is right here, but I am not 100%.

As far as I know these were mockup designs done in Famitsu or one of the other jap mags at the time. These pictures were certainly printed in Uk and american mags about a year before each of the consoles release dates so that would say to me that they are definetly not Nintendo's own designs.
As for Nintendo's official prototype designs for the nintendo 64,I know they toyed with the idea of releasing the machine with a built in 64dd drive.Interviews with both Miyamoto and Howard Lincoln have verefied this. That's the only proto I know off mentioned by Nintendo employees.

Indeed... I like 'em too. And surely there must be some truth to the whole deal (I dont suppose Famitsu or whatever would draw a U64 with a card slot if that wasnt planned at some stage) :smt017

AFAIK, those where done by the japanese "Super Famicom" mag in late 1994. Funny to see how different the actual systems turned out xD

You seem to have a lot of old japanese mags Yakumo... any Virtual Boy related articles from 1995 or 1996?

Sorry, I don't think I have anything on Virtual Boy apart from that concept controller shown at the top of this page.

Not to get off topic but I know your website. Actually I knew of it beforehand which is hard to say about most people on the forums.
