The really early days of Japanese gaming aren't too well documented in video on the internet. but if you know where to look, you can find bits an pieces The quirky bits are the best in my opinion. The growth of gaming is pretty much simultaneous with the growth in synthestic sound in the 70's and 80's. There's a Japanese group called YMO that was seen as quite revolutionary, even appearing in the USA which was quite special in those days. Some of the videos I'll pass by you that combine the early games and synth era are: Tong Poo : It's a stupid name in english, but it's an incredible video showing a lot of early arcade games that are near impossible to get in working condition these days. The suits seem out of place, but back then this was seen as a very real and important new type of music, now taken for granted. Some of those early games are pure logic. If you don't know who Ryuichi Sakamoto is, you need to learn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yf9LQKoq3ZM&search=tong%20poo Next up is a more experimental video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55zBhgP5cTY&search=ymo Let's see if you can recognize any of the sound chips. and here's a more recognizable video of synth with sounds generated on the same hardware in some early arcade hardware. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxFGjltdRd4&search=ymo
Fantastic links Kev !! I've never really listened to YMO to be honest but I'm sure glad that I have now. I'll have to search out some more of their stuff noxt time I'm at the used cd shop. Yakumo PS: That Tong Poo track sounds very much like Zuntata's music from Night Striker !!
superb. there's something about that era that makes these these types of creations all the more compelling. just weird and wonderful.
Is the main of the Firecracker one original YMO product? I would have assumed it was some yank disco act considering Lopez ripped it off in her hit "I'm Real", pretty cool.
Hmmm very cool, and very Kraftwerk, and awesome videos of old synthpop, electro pop, techno pop, what ever word you want to call that kind of music
Jello is a rip off slut, so she , or her record company is ripping/sampling from others, so she scores money.
I'm just saying its interesting for me to know where that came from as it seemed rather too good for her or the Lopez production team to come up with. I had assumed it was american disco or some older hip hop or so as with most her records.
Baseley: you aren´t the only music nerd around here I am also a music nerd/geek, and I prefer the word geek when it comes to music, since nerd is an offence to me.
Nerd, geek; I always thought they were the same thing. There's nothing wrong with a little J.Lo :020:
I've heard about YMO for a long time (mainly from when top game musicians list their greatest influence) but I haven't found any of their CDs. Which of their albums/CDs do you recommend the most, for a beginner to get into?
