Been reading the forums for a while but haven't actually posted much apart from my search for a specific item I'm looking to buy on the marketplace, figure I might as well baptise this so here goes... Name: Cameron Country: England Age: 24 Career/Education: Graphic Design / Higher National Diploma Found ASSEMbler whilst browsing various retro console websites with friends.
Welcome Cameron. You will like it here I see you are in Graphic Design... Aside from Computer Science, I've now thought about majoring in Graphic Design. How do you like graphic designing so far?
Sorry about the slow reply, it's a really nice trade but it's also a bit of a double-edged sword. If you want to earn more for your work you need to be self-employed as a freelance designer, as opposed to working for a firm, the trade off there is obviously a firm can provide you with a steady flow of work (and more importantly pay) whilst freelancing is fantastic while you can find the commissions but not very fun at all if you don't. It's also worth noting that you should only really consider a job like graphic design if it's a hobby of yours and you really enjoy doing it, as it's still a lot of work like any job. You need a decent legal advisor to write up a contract for you so as to avoid getting screwed over by less than ethical clients, along with a system for payment that ensures your time doesn't get wasted in the event of a bad experience between yourself and a client. The one I find the most sensible is 10% deposit on accepting the commission, 40% on the client's approval of the draft work (just before you start the final piece), and the final 50% upon completion.
