XBox 360 game Fuel. They put the writing on the wrong way so it looks stupid on my shelf. I had to reprint a cover. Fucking Fuel.
They should just print one manual in English and be done with it. Our new Sony TV came with an English manual only. Our DVD recorder on the other hand came with 5 thick manuals in different languages, my father threw out 4 of them. What a waste. (But in some countries there are laws that one manual needs to be in the official language, meh)
I like DVD cases because they can house nice big booklets and artwork, but won't crack if dropped or stepped on. Jewel cases crack and get scratched, and getting the manuals behind those little hooks is a bitch. Not to mention the hinges that always crack off or end up bending backwards. The new Blu-Ray cases are nice, and are smaller than the DVD ones, which is good for the environment and for saving space, but dammit it means I have to use different shelving / DVD racks!!
1. Gamecube JPN Cases I love the mini plastic case but the paper outer sleeve is impossible to keep mint. The corners of it always get destroyed even if just sitting on a shelf. They should have made the outer sleeve out of plastic. =| 2. NGPC Paper boxes It's not that these are horrible. I'm just pissed they went from the awesome plastic boxes to this crap. =|
All new games in Japan come factory sealed, even if you buy them 2nd hand they always come shrinkwrapped. Just slice the top part of the shrinkwrap with a razor so you can easily slide out the plastic case and leave the cardboard sleeve protected inside the shrinkwrap.
Pretty sure that's exactly the case (haha bad pun). Especially back when there were a million consoles around in the 90s and CDs were a new format, the companies had to find some way to make the cases distinct from each other (and I think they didn't just use jewel cases so there was an additional distinction between games and music CDs). Even today you've got PS3 cases which are radically different from the other systems'; although we did go through a generation of identical cases before this one.
And if they are sold on baskets the situation is ever worse. I remember found few copies of Boktai 1 on a very low price among with othere GBA games on baskets at a well-known super-market in Greece. But the condition of their cases was so awful that I thought they were second-handed. And so I didn't bought any copy of this game.
Years ago when I was at Wall-Mart, they had a bargain bin with carton boxes. Those things looked fucking awful. Ripped-of latches, countless cuts and marks. Not a single one in acceptable condition for a new game.
I think that Both the cardboard and plastic Saturn cases with the poor disc holding capabilities and the PAL Dreamcast cases which break so very, very easily are strong contenders for annoying cases. In fact, I would say any game with a non-standard brittle plastic case can go in the pile.
Sega saturn disc cases from the UK. They don't hold discs and the massive book manuals cause the disc to get knocked out and scratched up as it rattles around inside.
These aren't official, but back when Blockbuster was beginning to phase out their Genesis stock they were throwing out their yellow Genesis cases that were large enough to hold VHS tapes. Being I had a few busted Genny cases then I got a few and still have them. They are HORRID, especially after all these years.
I love the new thin plastic cases that stuff comes in. Thinner the plastic, the less we're wasting. Remember plastic is a petroleum product. With the exception of jewel cases (all you have to do is drop one ONCE and your hinges are dead), I don't think case durability is much of a problem except when considering the second-hand market. Sure, DVD and similar modern cases are big and bulky, but they're pretty bulletproof unless you're super careless. I mean, really - your game cases spend 99.9999% of their life on the shelf or in a box, NOT being opened or being handled. Anyways. I've been known to buy shitty sports Saturn games from thrift stores just to preserve one more of those giant jewel cases, putting it in a box and saving it from destruction.
All cardboards cases: you were lucky if it was in mint condition AT THE STORE Slim cases will look like shit no matter how careful you are. SEGA jewel cases were too fragile, using the same plastic from standard jewel cases but spread over a larger surface. On a side note, JPN Megadrive cases are near indestructible.
OBJECTION! When we still had our Megadrive that could play JPN games I dropped a case from roughly 2 or 3 feet onto laminate flooring and it smashed
OBJECTION! I once went down the stairs with a JPN MD game and it slipped out of my hands, now tumbling all the way down into the cellar. The case certainly acquired a scratch or two, but I could still sell it as "never used" on ebay - no tears or splattered corners Those cases are indestructible! Neo Geo snap cases look rock solid as well. I wonder if they can be destroyed... only by chuck norris maybe.
