Borderlands the pre sequel just released, I played it and it's very similar to the other Borderlands games. It's more like a huge expansion pack, not a new game. It's running on the same engine and has all of the game mechanics from the previous Borderlands games.
This can be said for a lot of games, for example, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.
What games do you think, have the most similar and non original sequels?

I think Vigilante 8 and Vigilante 8 2nd Offense is a very good clear example.

It's my idea of a sequel, I'm not too fussed on completely new gameplay, sometimes it's best to just add-on what was existing.

Other than sports games (obvious), I really can't tell the difference when I see video of Doom and Doom 2.

Obviously the best sequels expand what was great about the original, and fix any flaws in it, but I really don't see a big difference between them.

They both ran on the same engine, but doom 2 added a new weapon (the super-shotgun) and a ton of new enemies. Enemies that were hard to fight in doom 1 started showing up in groups, coupled with other monsters usually also, in doom 2. The super shotgun was a complete game changer in terms of level design and gameplay.

Every Call Of Duty game since 4? Hah.

Saints Row 3 & 4 were pretty similar because of what happened with THQ (or maybe they were just lazy and wanted to rush another game out).

    Crackdown > Crackdown 2

It was basically the exact same city with some minor graphical differences and details such as object placement and textures, etc. After spending months and months of playing Crackdown collecting orbs I wasn't about to just go do it again; it was truly lazy game design, by far one of the worst sequels I've ever had the displeasure of playing.

I can't really think of any. I can think of plenty of examples of the opposite - sequels that were very different from the original games.

Super Mario Galaxy 2. It was basically just more of the same, but that's exactly what I wanted anyway.

You are almost 100% right about Call of Duty. They did the ''your choices have an effect in the story'' in Black OPS 2. From all the modern COD games made in the last 4 years, I think that Black Ops 2 is the best one. COD Ghosts was just terrible, I played it for an hour and never returned to it, although I have completed every single COD game before that ( Even the Big red one for the PS2 and all of the expansions).

The Batman Arkam games are all pretty much the same, adding an element or two here and there

Isn't every game same to the newer game these days. I forget who was talking about this but I think it was game theory person and he said people don't like change to newer games lol. He used data from the sales of games. I just find that funny but it's only a theory.

While I see your point, I do think DOOM and DOOM II are strikingly similar. While we were exposed to endgame enemies earlier in DOOM II, it was still close enough for some to mistake it as an expansion pack. You get the chainsaw relatively early in both and overall it really felt like a continuation. In a way it felt a little like what Ressurection of Evil was to DOOM3, which is probably what they aimed for. Also Quake and Quake II were pretty similar.

I don't see this. Quake took place underground and Quake II took place on some planet. And I always felt Quake was more horror to Quake II's sci-fi.

Upon looking over some videos of both, I think you're right. Not sure why I thought they were so similar. Haven't played them in a while I guess. The gameplay is pretty similar, but that could be said about any FPS.
