Hey Gang, This is more of a personal opinion question (so no right or wrong answers here), but how do people feel about using a mouse and keyboard on consoles? Do most people consider it cheating, or do most people consider it fair game? I personally consider it fair since everyone has the option to use the control method you like. For example, an arcade stick is optimal for fighting games, a driving wheel is optimal for driving. I would assume keyboard / mouse adapters fall under the same lines for FPS games right? I mean, I wouldn't recommend you use a flight simulator joystick to play SF4, but your free to do so. Much like your probably free to use an arcade stick to play Call of Duty. What do other people think?
I did not buy a console to use a mouse and keyboard but I also do not take issue with it as long as you are not breaking any competitive rules. Using alternative controllers can yield some really fun/interesting challenges like playing Tetris on a DDR pad after pounding a few beers.
How is it cheating to use an input device the game has been coded to accept? It's not like you haven't been able to previously...
Seems fine. But if you want to use a mouse and keyboard, why not just use a PC? I do think mouse and keyboard are optimal for FPS games. Although, maybe an ideal setup would be a mouse for aiming and an analog stick for movement.
As I mentioned originally, I personally don't have a problem with it. I just noted that on some forums, people seemed to go as far as say that it was 'hacking' or 'cheating' to use a mouse and keyboard on a console. Like it gives you an unfair advantage over everyone else, especially when coupled with console-specific features like 'aim-assist' and such for controllers. I just found it an interesting topic to discuss to be honest. A lot of the people who say it's 'cheating' usually also say that if they wanted to use a mouse and keyboard they should stick to playing on PC. However, on the other side of the coin I know a lot of people who prefer to play on consoles these days since it eliminates most legit hacking and cheating (ie. walk through walls, aim-bot, modify textures, etc).
Isn't it possible to play for example, final doom ps1 using a keyboard and mouse (maybe not a keyboard since sony never released one) through the usb ports on a ps2 since the ps2 accepts those kind of items?
I think more console games should allow the use of K/M, I never used them on the PS2 versions of Half Life and Deus Ex but i always thought it was cool that the option was there Especially with modern consoles having USB ports there is no excuse really. I don't see it as cheating, its just like someone using an arcade stick for fighting games
Not a problem. Consider the side of the keyboard user. If he/she is really that better using a keyboard, how long will this player "have fun" playing against controller users? Someday the player will go away...
Pretty sure hes talking about 3rd party keyboard/mouse adapters, that take the keyboard and mouse input and map them to the controller - far as the console is concerned, you are using a controller. Not just plugging in a mouse/keyboard. Edit: See - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q11rnJUleuI
Not if you use an adapter which remaps to the controller. I know this exists for the PS2, because I own one. Not very sophisticated, but way better than playing on a gamepad.
I think the very few people who would mind this probably would after being beat competitively by a person using a mouse and keyboard.
It may be partially why cross-platform multiplayer has never been very popular. For FPS, at least, a person with a controller cannot beat a person with a mouse. The keyboard really has no advantage over a controller, the mouse is the key. A mouse (optical) has way more control and accuracy than a controller does. You can look around much faster as well. It is the same conversation for PC with players who use a mouse for look, a keyboard for look, or play with a joystick or trackball/pad. Mouse is always king in that discussion as well. However from that viewpoint, the person with the mouse is not seen as cheating. It is the people using the joystick or trackpad are choosing to use an inferior interface, whether it is by their preference (as in they are in for fun and not competition) or they have no other (current) option. So for console use, it certainly isn't cheating because it is a supported function of the game. I personally do not play FPS on a console because I cannot play them properly with a controller. I have been told I can plug in a mouse and keyboard, but I do not know to what degree they are supported and if there is any input lag.
Mouse and keyboard is not a cheat code, it's a control method but I have to agree that it can enhance ability.
It's cheating if the game is intended for joypad play and is not coded for mouse and keyboard, but a mouse and keyboard adapter is used to overcome that limitation. This is why console FPS games have filtered input and auto-aim functions, they are to compensate for the weaknesses of a joypad as a method of input. To say that it is not cheating, with the rationale that anyone could use the same method, is akin to an athlete taking performance enhancing drugs and saying it is not cheating because anyone could take the drugs.
