Hey, I remember watching some movies about video gaming/consoles a couple years back, but can't quite remember the titles. Do you guys know of any that are worth seeing?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_of_Kong:_A_Fistful_of_Quarters Lot of people say the movie is a load of crap but I've yet to see anyone actually say that who has any credibility in the required departments. Keyboard warriors need not apply.
Gotta put the Tron series here as the king of video game inspired movies. I'd also include War Games which is based around computer gaming.
I think we already had a huge collection thread about that a long time ago. Video Games in Movies as well Movies about/of Video Games etc.
Was it about xbox 360's owners, as soon as the red ring of death hits you the phone rings and a voice says: 7 days...?
@Tatsujin I think this one is rather about movies that are ABOUT gaming, not movies with just a few minor references to gaming / hardware. @Thread King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (documentary) Chasing Ghosts (documentary) Shmups documentary on GameOne (ca. 25min, French w/subtitles on youtube and other sources) Game Center CX (Japanese show with Famicom playthroughs - there are about 10 long and another 5 short episodes available with (fan-)subs, the other 6 seasons are entirely in Japanese and available on DVD) Gamer (recent movie with Gerard Butler iirc) eXisTenZ (Cronenberg movie) The Wizard (Nintendo NES propaganda movie from '89) Well I like arcade video games a lot and I thought it was very entertaining. What I didn't like to be honest was the way the dudes from Twin Galaxies were behaving. I really hated them towards the end of the movie But I don't think the "documentary" necessarily showed everything one needs to know to understand their behavior. I've been told that the Missile Command-guy has some crazy problems (and I believe that just by looking at him) and harrassed Billy Mitchell and his family several times. Using Steve Wiebe as a foot-soldier in his war against Mitchell isn't the finest thing to do and therefore I can rather understand Mitchells ressentiments against him - and his companion, Wiebe. Still, King of Kong is more entertainment than information, but it's fun to watch. You will also see pathetic ass-sucking losers like Brian Kuh that nobody would ever have known about without this movie. "Chasing Ghosts" goes a little deeper into the arcade scene and provides some great background info on the "golden age of video games" in 1980-1982. The "Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard" is the cornerstone of this documentary and different from the "King of Kong", it does not just concentrate on some 1-on-1 competition and vendetta-operations, it portraits an era and the people who shaped it. Twin Galaxies is rubbish though. Walter Day seems like a nice guy, but it's stupid to claim to have an "international scoreboard" while ignoring Japanese highscores. That's not only ignorant, it makes the entire project obsolete.
I dare you to watch this shit http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0281919/ and this http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0456554/
There was this wicked episode of Parker Lewis all about gaming addiction and in the end a huge pile of Genesis, Gamegear and SNES stuff got smashed by a steamroller xD

I enjoyed that movie. Very interesting about the intense competition. You're not a hardcore gamer if you could relate to that movie in one way or another...
This film is awsome... even looks good in 1080p which is rare for newer films done cheaply, old film done expensively FTW! Documentaries aside, Of course there is also Michael Douglas in The Game which should count too? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119174/
There aren't so many good movies about games because there haven't been any serious attempts at doing one. The closest we got was the Halo movie by Bloomkamp, which thanks to the idiot suits from movie studios it was canned and remade as District 9, which was awesome nonetheless. It scored 97% on RT, how does that sucks? Now if you take the word of retarded kids on youtube who haven't played anything besides GTA...
I've heard this too, that it's "creatively" edited, that it casts Billy Mitchell in an unfair light, etc. I don't think it's possible to edit Billy Mitchell to look anything other than a raging dickhead, though. The man is detestable.
Ben X is a good example of a movie that handles gaming pretty decently. That's not to say there are many good movies however. For everyone who glossed over my post (and it seems everyone did) here's a second chance http://apocalypsepow.blogspot.com/2009/12/videogame-cinema.html
