Sounds good, but I don't really think I want to live in Canada though (if I were to use this option).

Yeah I do mean a Police Officer.

Note that California is brutally expensive, and Texas is one of the cheapest states. Unfortunately, it only has one place in the habitable zone: Austin. The rest is barren wasteland unless living in the bible belt is your cup of tea.

Yes California is really expensive, you can get a mansion in Texas with what you would normally get a regular 3-4 bedroom house here in California. What Gaijin said about Texas though is not really true. I lived in the Fort Worth/Dallas area and was quite nice. Texas also has some of the better schools in the country and seems less affected by the economic problems. Barren waste land? in the west, yes, but around where I lived was mostly green, and more east was somewhat forrest-like. If I couldn't live in California, I'd go to back to Texas.

Emigrated myself from cold rainy bankrupt class ridden overpriced Britain full of mean old unfriendly sexually repressed people who live in tiny damp houses... I'm British I can say what I like about my country of birth. :) To beautiful friendly New Zealand.

It's great, I'm 12 thousand miles away from the nearest chav.

If you're a bit fed up with your country, and with a lot of countries that would be very understandable, it's really worth the effort. Sell everything you own, use that cash for the move, easiest way.

Seriously kids, you could live somewhere like this: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?17-Living-and-Collecting-in-Japan

    Or like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mb7aVOCEBw0

And then spend all your time inside playing crappy PC shooters like me.

Some parts of California are quite reasonable in cost but typically are far enough off the beaten path that it will be difficult to find a high paying job which is typical of "cost of living" situations.

I doubt it'd be more expensive than a house in Australia, property prices are crazy over here. Many people just can't afford to stay on these places and end up living in small crappy units for the price of a house in the US.
