Im moving. Its decided, and it will take place in the next months. And by moving, it's not intended from "here" to "there" but "from country xx to country yy". Now, what are in your opinion the best ways to move my collection and my valuable items?
How are you moving? Driving or flying and are you moving furniture/appliances? When I moved 3000 miles (4800 km), we hired a freight company to move our stuff so I just packed stuff in bubble wrap into boxes and the really important items I wrapped in blankets and comforters. If you aren't moving like that, but are flying to your new home, you will probably want to mail your items by the most secure postal method. Either get someone near your old location to send them after you arrive at your new location or send them to someone you know at your new location to hold them for you.
Depending on how much you have, container/crates and ship it over land/sea. Best way and cheaper, but takes a long time.
Assuming that the move is long-term & not for less than a couple of years, then: If you're moving because of work, check to see that they won't assist/have shipping companies that they recommend. Make a detailed inventory of what you have, with current market values if possible. Digital images & receipts are good, too. Look into getting insurance cover for the valuable stuff & make sure that your shipper inventories everything, so you can check it back in on arrival of the stuff. I had a box of stuff disappear in one move - thankfully, the most valuable thing lost was only an oldish laptop. Thin out anything that you don't really need. This is next to impossible, if you're a packrat, like me, but if you're paying for the shipping yourself, then it suddenly starts to make more sense. If the move is short term & you're coming back, storage might be a better bet, but from the way you put it, I'm assuming it's long term.
Seems like it. Waiting to get a final answer and see where in the world I have to be stationed first though.
