MPEG-2 codec Can anyone recommend a good (free) MPEG-2 codec? I have a new PC with Vista and it looks like WMP11 doesn't have it. I did a search but I get so many dodgy websites that I thought I'd ask here instead.
Stinky's mpeg-2 codec is quite good despite the name and its free. You can get it from the following website which i use alot and its good for getting lots of diffrent codecs http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Stinky_MPEG_2_Codec.htm
If you don't mind using a different media player than WMP11, get VLC. It has built in mpeg2 decoding (along with a host of others codecs such as AC3 and whatnot). It is no nonsense, has (literally) over 80 million downloads, and you don't have to mess around with stink's mpeg2 codec and ac3 filter. It is free, fast, and fantastic.... give a shot, seriously. www.videolan.org
I think I'll give that a shot. How good is it at playing high quality xVID videos. Winamp slows down like shit and WMP will skip frames at full screen. Bear in mind I'm using a 1.7Gig CPU here. Yakumo
I think my install of vista had an MPEG-2 decoder - although one of the first things I download/install is the k-lite codec pack. Absolutely everything you'll need in there: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm Alternatively, as already mentioned, VLC is a fine piece of software
Well as i suggested the Stinky's mpeg-2 codec if you just need a codec but if you want to be able to play a lot of diffrent files then the K-Lite codec pack is the best it alows you to play almost any file type you can think of
Be careful of codec packs. They have a tendency to install too many codecs and cause compatibility issues, they're really intended to let you pick the one you need for installing at any given moment. VLC seems to render internally rather than by installed codecs, and it nails everything I throw at it 100% pretty much, so I've more or less switched solely to it. Media Player Classic is the only other media player I have installed on my computer, it's faster than VLC and comes bundled when you grab RealAlternative and QuickAlternative, which are both nice, so it's worth keeping around.
Be carefule with Klite as I've dealt with systems filled with spyware/malware that tend to be included with that suite. I use FFDShow and VLC for files WMP won't play by default.
K-Lite is working well... VLC wasn't working before I installed the codecs, might give it another shot. I use that to play anything that doesn't load up in JetAudio or WMP11.
