MSX Video Cable Parts

Discussion in 'General Gaming' started by Greatsaintlouis, Jan 8, 2006.

  1. So with the help of the ever knowledgeable AntiPasta, I've finally figured out what needs to be done to make a working video cable for my Yamaha CX5MU MSX computer. However, after a trip to RadioShack today, I realized that aquiring a part might be a little bit more difficult than I imagined.
Here's the pinout for the port on the MSX:

It's a 5-pin DIN connector the exact size as a standard 5-pin MIDI connector, with one crucial difference: the placement of the pins. A MIDI connector has the pins arrayed in a half-circle along the bottom of the connector; on this jack the pins are more widely spaced and spread out along a 280 degree angle.

I just need to find a plug with solder-type connections; does anybody know what the technical name for this type of plug would be, and any (preferably US) webstores that might carry it (and wouldn't require a 10-100 piece minimum order)?

Looks like a Mega Drive or Master System input to me. Have you checked them?

  4. I've got a US model 1 Genesis, and while the port on the back was the same size, it has 8 pins instead of 5. My Supergrafx A/V lead will connect to the MSX, but the pinout for both systems is different and so I get no signal.

EDIT/UPDATE: After realizing that I did originally have the MSX hooked up to the Supergrafx lead, I wondered how that could possibly be if the pins are spaced differently. The answer is that I'm an idiot for reading the schematics without consulting with the physical machine - the actual port on the MSX is just a normal 5-pin DIN jack, whereas the above schematic was totally wrong. Guess this means I can go back to RadioShack tomorrow to get the right part. :banghead:

Thanks for the link to the mic plug, Assembler, but I'm not sure if that would have fit even if the picture HAD been correct...
