I would like to make an AC adapter for my AV Famicom, SNES Mini, and Genesis 2 (VA4). Might add a NES as well. I am looking for recommendations on the power supply to use. Something high quality, 9-10v, and inexpensive (not cheap). From what i read anything from 7 to 12 (or higher) volts is fine with these. But i would like to stay around 9-10. I have a Sony slim PSU that is 8.5v 5.6a... Just not sure if 8.5v is enough for the Famicom AV based on http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=6933.0

    Something like this..

    and this..
    ..
Without the voltage step down box since i plan to start with the correct voltage.

Yes, i know about the different plug polaritys. And yes i have seen a few for sale (RetroDC and the SEGA one) but i want to make my own. :)

If anyone has done this before feel free chime in :)

    Thanks.

Do you plan to power up all your consoles simultaneously or one at a time?

I tend to only play one at a time hehe. But im sure 2 might get turned on by mistake at some point. I'd also prolly have them all on at least once to marvel at my creation :D

Im actually interested in the same thing. I'd like one to power 3 consoles simultaneously (mega drive/mega cd/32x) What volt/amp power supply would you recommend? Soldering the cables together isnt a problem.

Watch the first video. 9-10v and 3 or more amps should be fine. You can also just buy one made for your specific SEGA set up.

EDIT: Looks like a very cheap China power supply tho :/

I myself use PS2 power supply with DC splitters (you can get 1:2 1:4 and 1:10 if I remember correctly). It has plenty of power and it's of solid quality. It's 8.5V but you really don't need more as most of the consoles use 7805 voltage regulator which outputs 5V. 8.5V - 5V = 2.5V is more than enough (it drops some) and less voltage means less heat, you're gonna be fine with 8.5V.
    Splitter:

    You may need polarity reverser:

And finally if you decide to go with PS2 power supply you'll need to solder female EIAJ-3 to male 2.1 barrel connector:

The second video is one I made :p

The famicom uses a Voltage regulator internally anyway so it'd run off 8.5v fine
That will be fine and be a much cleaner solution, just be sure to get correct polarity and label the plugs.

A lot of systems don't have reverse polarity protection

There are different types of PS2 slim power supply. Earliest ones give up to 5.65 amps of juice, later ones give 4.5 amps.

Ok, so my idea is to have 1 power supply to power my SNES/Mega Drive/PS2

Im guessing the PS2 Slim's 8.5v power supply can power all 3 of these systems, but what size barrel jacks do I need for each one?

Ive measured them myself, so I know what I need now, but the hardest part is finding what you need.... all the major electronic outlets like mouser and digikey want £12 for shipping. £12 to ship a £1 barrel jack lmao. I'll pass.

Not sure what they are like in your part of the world but over here only the SNES barrel is proprietary. The others are "easy" to find on other adapters. Try a thrift shop if you dont have a bunch laying around.

You can even change the female socket in your console to anything you want really.

Most of us are aware of those. I mentioned them in a couple posts. I want to make my own :D

Just posted the in-depth review of those to help the topic. ;)

A reliable power supply is the most important thing to keep electronics safe and running well, specially old videogame systems.

That's why i don't like the premades and one of the reasons i want to make my own. If you look at all of the premade ones they look like just the cheap $7 China laptop PSUs you can buy all day on ebay.
