I've just won a PAL multimega (CD-X) from Ebay UK and was wondering is it possible to region mod it as well as a 50/60htz mode just like a standard Mega Drive or Mega Drive II? It should work fine via RGB on a monitor but I'd love to run it on a standard TV however all Japanese TVs are NTSC only from what I know unlike the ones in PAL land.

Region and video refresh mods are applied in the same method as for standalone Megadrive and Mega CD units. Unfortunately, the little jumpers are hard to get at, and the CD region is still controlled by the contents of the BIOS. Here are a couple of references:

    CDX region mod: http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=801.0
    CDX internal pictures: http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=2449#entry16607

Crap. Some of the GamesX photo links are stale. I'll try to hit up the original posters for updated URLs.

I read somewhere that most people left it well alone, not only because everthing is much smaller, and that less work in general has been done on the CDX/Multimega, but also that the PCB is FOUR.. yes FOUR layers:eek:h:

I hate multilayer PCBs... 32X has a 4 layer one aswell... makes any research quite a bit of hassle !!!

In case of multimega, its just a variation of MD2, and it should be 100% compatible... only difficulties are fitting things inside it (not much room...).

OK, I'm all set to region mod the multimega but what is the best type of solder, wire and iron point size to use. I have some solder in the house that contains led from what I remember.

The lead-based solder will actually flow better on components of this size. A tiny, stranded wire gauge will serve you best here, like 30 or smaller if you can find it. Any chance you have an SMD soldering station, something with a hot air blower on it?

For this, I would use a rather low power iron (25W), with very fine well tinned tip and I would use this wire used in ATA cables.

ATA cable wire? Not too sure if they have that. I'll have a good look. I'll also have to buy a new but for the iron. The one I have is way to thick.

    Thanks for the info guys.
