Been away as I'm up to my neck in work at the moment, but I do have a few quick questions which would help me out: do any of you listen to your own music while playing videogames? If you do, do you switch the sound of entirely or just turn down the music in the options? Does this change between genres?

Any input appreciated - cheers all.

depends on the quality of the music. In game music is not as good for one-offs usualy, but appropriate for gaming sessions. In the case that I do not like the soundtrack of a game, i d rather turn off the music (and not the SFX) completely, rather than pop-in alternative music of my own. Its usualy either silent or in-game music - my own music is reserved for my free time, driving, going to the gym etc.

I always listen to in-game music. Like i would never turn off the music in a movie even if i dont like it, i dont turn off game-music either even if i dont like it. Besides i think "normal" music is hardly ever suitable to go with a game.

I listen to the game audio 99% of the time. Can't understand people who play a game but turn offthe sound. Would you mute a movie because it had shit music? The 1% that I don't listen to the music on are the consturction kit games.

The only game I play with my own music is Tetris Attack, and that's simply because I'll fall asleep with the sound effects in my head. I used to play that game way too much.

I agree with Yakumo. By the way, Wild Arms soundtrack is one of my all time favourites.

Yeah, Natsume did a really good job on the Wild Arms soundtrack.

I listen to my own music usually, but only turn the music off and try to match the music genre to the game genre.

The worst ingame music is American heavy rawk style tracks, IMHO :)

Edit: But weirdly I love Rock as a genre. I guess because I like rock I can spot the bad!

this used to be a serious problem between me and a friend growing up. He'd always mute the SNes and play shitty metal while playing everything, whereas I was a game music fan.

I play games with their music intact. I generally don't play american games so I generally don't get very shitty music, though there are games with seriously bad OSTs.

But why would anyone mute Mitsuda, for example?
