Yeah, Alien Soldier is something I noticed was marvelous after just a Quick glance on Youtube. The really good things are usually universal and easy to spot, imo, and Alien Soldier is one of those things. Soo.. by now I have recieved my 10 games + md2 clone package from russia. Which I'm happy with as everything works like it should, the av is a solid 7/10, and it's got a built in region & tv-mode switch. The games I got with it are: Alien Soldier, Dynamite Headdy (jap), Toy Story, Mickey Mania, Sonic 3D, Sonic & Knuckles, Bubba Stix, Bad Omen, Fantastic Dizzy and a couple of more which, for the life of me, I can't remember atm. Bubba stix was actually a nice surprise as it managed to creep me out in the middle of the day (lol!) when I noticed that the freaking trees where glaring at me and stalking me around. Can't say much about bad omen as I usually don't like those type of games outside of a smartphone. Furthermore, I got 8 more "repros" coming from aliexpress, all for $5 a piece: Pulseman (no save), Duke Nukem, Comix Zone, Gunstar Heroes, Wolfenstein 3D, Yuu Yuu Hakusho Makyou Toitsusen, Twinkle Tale English and Panorama Cotton
Wheres all the Toejam and Earl love at. One of my favorite games. Has a funky soundtrack and some funny stuff going on too.
T&e is great but I'm trying to go for real "wow" factor games, preferably by less talked about games. T&e was super mainstream back in the day and still is today so it isn't underrated.
Does anyone remember that site which had a few Wii Virtual Console mega drive roms? They had Monster World 4 (the official english version) and some other mega drive roms ripped from Wii VC..
Two suggestions from me: -Puggsy -Misadventures of Flink Puggsy is by travelers tails and published by psygnosis, same as Toy Story. it displays a lot of colors, has a lot of diversity in level environment graphics, and has some pretty good music. The object interaction puzzle solving element isn't really done much in other platformers either so it has some unique gameplay elements. Lots of other impressive graphics things in this game, including sprite scaling and rotation and tricks to get more than the "allowed" number of colors on screen at once. Flink was developed primarily by two people, one programmer and one artist, and also published by psygnosis, but the graphics and animation are super gorgeous - like almost on the level of Rayman. It is a tough game and uses no passwords or saves, so you have to beat it in one go, but for the graphics and animation alone, this is a very impressive genesis game. The music kinda grows on you too, and it has a complex spell casting system where you can make your own magic spells from items you've collected - kinda unusual for a platformer where you otherwise typically jump on enemies.
If your looking looking something different I always liked haunting... you play as a ghost chasing people out of their various houses with loads different scares... it is aimed at kids though so it's not a horror game... Maybe try an emulator if you wanna try it out...
Sword of Vermilion is a pretty innovative game on the Genesis/Megadrive love the stuffings out of that game! it has Action RPG/First Person View and the towns are top-down esque Jrpg style and it's ALL packaged into one game plus the Soundtrack is VERY Excellent! my personal favorite is the dungeon tunes:
I'll definitely check out Flink some more, it looks amazing. As for Puggsy, isn't it kind of like Fantastic Dizzy with the object interaction? Anywhoo, first impression is: I don't like it Partly because I usually don't have the patience needed for these kind of games but also because I find Puggsy creepy looking. I won't be getting any of them as I've settled with Streets of Rage 2 and Bare Knuckle 3 Director's Cut. That's enough of sidescrolling beatemups for me. And I don't like 16bit era racers for some reason. Only mario kart and maybe outrun, oh and rock n roll racing (because of the rock n roll soundtrack) but that's it. Nevertheless, I appreciate your comment. Always interesting to know what people like. That's a funky little game. Thanks for sharing. Have you played Dynamite Headdy? That game encompasses what I'm was looking for, when creating this thread, very well. The game is somewhat of 0 a hidden gem (people don't usually talk about it and it wasn't very popular back in the day) yet it is 1 absolutely gorgeous and detailed and 2 sounds incredible while 3 having a nice uninterrupted gameplay flow and 4 is innovative/stands out by combining 2D/3D and different gameplay styles (platformer/shootemup). I like how bold your whole post is I've seen it before, however I've settled with Shining Force 2, Phantasy Star 4 and Rentahero for now. Maybe I'll check it out once I'm done with those three.
Here's a few underrated gems in my opinion: Moonwalker, Mega Man Wily Wars, Castlevania Bloodlines, Jurassic Park Rampage Edition, Shadow Dancer. Also Snatcher is worth the price of a Sega CD alone Also, Add Rambo 3 to the list. That game is awesome, and never seems to get any love.
No, I think those are all good sega genesis games that are overlooked by many. You asked for opinions. If you've never played these games I suggest giving it a try. There are plenty of Genesis/Mega Drive fans on here that will vouch for each title I mentioned. Genesis is my favorite console of all time! The most questionable title I mentioned was Wily Wars. Purists will insist on the NES originals. Wily Wars is good though, especially if your looking for repro carts. No, it's just hard! It took me years to beat it, not on hard either! The music in Rambo 3 I think is some of the best on the system. It's tied with Contra Hard Corps for me. The 1-on-1 matches against the tanks, helicopters in the game are awesome. My advice.....never stop shooting. Bad guys pop outta everywhere and never stop coming! The last couple levels on the Russia supply depot are painfully tough.....Video games nowadays are easy compared to the oldschool games. Game developers could care less back then if you could make it to the end. Even a lot of children and Disney games are tough. I think they enjoyed us getting frustrated hahaha
Totally... when I think of the games I used to play years ago there's very few that I ever got anywhere on!! I played ghouls and ghosts for the first time not too long ago to realise I'd never got past the first level!!! Anyway... hijack over... I heard cosmic spacehead was a good one... Ristar... aero the acrobat and bubsy were also good too!
If you can afford the original Genesis cart, get MUSHA Aleste. Pound for pound it's one of the best shmups I have ever played on any system. If you wanna save a few bucks, the JP MD version is much cheaper or just use an Everdrive.
Just had to say this: had a more up close look at this game and wow! It's absolutely gorgeous! What a gem! Thanks alot for mentioning it. A real treat to look at.
Glad it looks interesting to you, actually I'm meaning to pick it up myself having only tested it out through emulation. I guess a repro would be the most affordable way. Not sure whether any of the people doing repros do any kind of patch to make it run normal speed at 60Hz, since the PAL release optimized for 50hz is the only version that was ever released on cart. Fun fact, the guy who drew all of the sprites for this game was later contracted (along with several other artists) to do spritework for NG Dev Team's Gunlord.
As you seem unfamiliar with the Shining series, you really need to give them a go. Great games... even Shining in the Darkness is worthwhile. Glad you have Bomberman, Dynamite Headdy, Dizzy and Toy Story on there. There were some great film franchises on Mega Drive, I'd say Jurassic Park (different from the SNES version), Lion King,Aladdin and Taz-Mania, albeit more common titles. Eternal Champions is a pretty obvious choice. I have to agree with that list. Was Batman and Robin on Megadrive? That was great on the SNES and looked really nice at the time. Talking of SNES games I haven't played on Mega Drive - Rock 'n' Roll Racing is superb. And Mr. Nutz, for that matter. Oh, and Zombies Ate My Neighbours. California Games was always fun. Syndicate was awesome. Cannon Fodder was great but I haven't tried the Mega Drive version - likewise Lemmings (looks a bit dated now) and Worms. The Micro Machines games were amongst my favourites on Mega Drive. Sunset Riders was a decent conversion. One somewhat obscure game I should mention is Marko's Magic Football. It looked really nice... and my friend worked on it! And, of course, the modern Pier Solar looks fab. Snatcher isn't worth the price of Snatcher, though!
No but it is worth a pack of CD-Rs. I think the Sega CD has enough quality titles to warrant the purchase. Some aren't terribly expensive either.
