I hate to say this, especially on this forum. But I only like the console (PSX) version of doom really. That MIDI music and those sound effects make me feel sick.

    yuck...

    lol....sorry!

If you hate the midi music play the 3D0 version. Has the best music of all the ports. It's THE definitive port IMO.

I've seen extensive footage of the 3DO version, but don't you have to use a code to make that full screen, then it judders when you do. Also I'm sure it doesn't utilise the same score as PSX/Saturn doom or the same SFX (more realistic weapon noises).

Apologies if I'm wrong about the weapon noises, but I'm 100% sure it doesn't feature the same epic creepy score.

EDIT: just youtube'd it and yeah it uses the same SFX as the PC and a slightly hyped up soundtrack based on the PC version. Again, I really don't like that soundtrack at all, even jazz'd up it sounds like shit to me. I loved the PSX sound, the sense of hopelessness and creepiness it injected into most levels, and the impact the more realistic weapon noises added to shooting the crap out of a room full of enemies.

Nah wait I got it confused. The Jag is the best port of Doom, However 3D0 has the best music.

I really can't understand your viewpoint here at all.

Jag doom had no music but decent frame rate (EDIT: Just youtube'd it - no decent framerate there ether!) if I remember correctly, 3DO has the most true to the original soundtrack jazz'd up.

However how can you overlook the fact that the PSX & Sa....err PSX has a great frame rate and also has an undeniably amazing soundtrack + the best SFX to boot = the best port by far!

PSX mgiht have actually been the best port. but it has issues.

PSX Doom - Good port. Nice lighting added that wasn't in the original. Most of the PC levels with nice graphics. Some of the levels are smaller. The brightness is really weird too. No save games and the password system blew. I don;t particuarly like the music on it (IIRC it was new stuff)

Semi related Final Doom is complete shit. Nothing new apart from new levels which are pretty crap in all honesty and is missing some from the PC version of final doom. It's using the same engine and they didn't fix any of the problems really.

Saturn is total shit though. Almost a direct port of PSX doom. no lighting piss poor framerate and pixelated as hell.

Thats one hell of a speed run, good work to your brother, I really fail at those normally...

As for which of the official versions are the best:

The PC or linux versions are the best in my opinion: while they do use midi, there is no trad-off gameplay wise, the official consoles versions has had some levels removed and altered (smaller rooms in Jaguar and PSX versions for instance) ,as well as missing enemies, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versions_and_ports_of_Doom

If the sound is truelly that bad,you do get wad replacement packs that help with that, and this is ofcourse compatible with any of the modern ports of doom out now http://www.skulltag.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=28330

Xeauron, the quality of the MIDI music depends completely on the hardware used to play it, I recently bought a Roland Sound Canvas card (the SCP-55 PCMCIA model) and I'm discovering the pleasure of the games with MIDI music all over again :)
You can find a lot of recordings at http://www.swaaye.com/retro/

The great thing about the PSOne and Jaguar ports was the link-up mode.
