Had some problems noted here the other day re "error1058"

Well with all your help, managed to get it sorted

However now my PC seems to have lost the in built card readers "sd/compact flash etc

From the little I know In have re-installed the drivers, but still not visible

Looked in hardware, but can`t seem to see anything that resembles them/it

Any ideas again would be appreciated

Glad to hear the other issues have been resolved.

When you say "looked in hardware", do you mean you checked Device Manager? Because if they're there, then remove them and see what happens. Uninstalling the drivers would also be a good place to start, as mostly XP should pick up these devices without the need for anything else. Basically, remove all trace of them and run the Add Hardware wizard to see if they get detected.

Also, not wanting to point out the obvious, but it'd be worth checking the physical connections.

Try simply unplugging it from your PC, physically. Since it's USB (assuming it is), then it should automatically detect it, even if the card reader is hooked up internally.

If it doesn't then it's most likely dead...

This is almost identical to my PC and it is in the in-built card reader type

You have to open up your case and follow the wire from that module to your mainboard where it plugs in...

Uh..? Madhatter's right, you need to check this. Regardless of whether it shipped with the PC (which is what I think you're getting at), there's a physical connection which could be loose.

Could be a connection issue even if it is still plugged in, had a similar issue with a USB port connected onto the motherboard's USB header which stopped any devices from showing up but i just unplugged it re-booted into windows shut windows down and re-connected it and that seemed to work.

Go to the control panel -> System ->Hardware->Device Manager. Look to see if any of the items are not installed correctly. The majority of the time the flash card reader error is caused by something not being installed correctly. I have seen a lot of HP computers that have this problem and it is usually the SMbus. Please update as to what you find.

Tried that but can`t seem to see them at all

Think it has to be a format hard drive :-(

Try booting up a live CD of some kind and seeing if they reappear. If they don't then reinstalling Windows will be a waste of time.

I had a Dell laptop that wouldn't see the cardreader until I booted it up with an SD card in it. It triggered the hardware detection, installed some drivers, and since then it works perfectly. I suggest you try that first before doing a complete re-install.

When trying a Linux live cd, make sure you try compact flash or sd cards. Another system I have runs OpenSuse, and sees the card reader, except for the Sony Memory Stick device/part. The support for Sony Memory Sticks is not as good as sd or compact flash.
