I just got off work at a gamestore in central Ohio. About a half hour before close a kid walks in with a SE xbox wants to trade it in. Its a Mountain Dew SE box.

He asks the valuse and I hesitate for a second and tell him 20$ store credit. I grind my teeth as he thinks about it. Finally he agrees and I buy it from the store on the spot!

This has made my day! I have never even seen one of these things but I got it for only 50$!

Does anyone know how rare they are or what they are worth. It works perfectly

Cool find and great price. There not to rare but you could resell it at a higher value like around 250 or more depending on how bad the buyer wants it.

Just like that guy at FuncoLand who convinced me to sell Yoshi's Story N64 for $7, then saw it for sale the next day at $42.

    I was young!!!!!

I didnt lie to anyone. I asked my manager if I could offer him cash over the phone because he called in and he said I had to tell him the store value. I did and a Xbox is 20 in store credit. I didnt think he would bring it in. When he did I was suprised.

It was a goth kid about 14. He had put Duct tape all over the console. I asked him why and he said to make it look cooler. He said he would peel it off if I took a picture with my phone so I did. The kid was retarded and obvisouly didnt care about the system.

I don't think most 14 year-olds would know or care about gaming rarities and obscurities, but let's be honest, I think I and many other people on the forums would've probably done the same thing you did Micjohvan.

its like finding something valuable at a yard sale. Do you keep your mouth closed and buy it or do you tell them, hey this is worth 200 bucks you shouldnt sell this for 5 dollars.

I told the kid over the phone we gave 20 for it in store credit. I didnt think he would ever bring it in cause he acted pissed that it was so little. So when he showed up I just kept working and my manager did the transaction. After it was done I said I want to buy that. I dont know why everyones acting like I did something wrong.

Then I might as well pre-screen all marketplace posts so I can scoop the good stuff, and make all of the price check posts go to my inbox alone. That way I can say "$20" to everything people ask about and take advantage of people who are unaware. Especially 14 year old goth kids.

I don't think anything wrong was done here. It's the kids problem that it went so cheap. He wasn't forced to sell it. If he's stupid enough to sell it for 20 USD then so be it.

Are some of you really upset at me for this!!! I dont understand. If I would have offered him cash over the phone I would have lost my job. I just told him 20 bucks in store credit and said goodbye like my manager told me to do. I even told him (my manager) I wish I could buy it.

Then like a hour later he strolls trough the door with it in hand. My manager tells him that its only 20 bucks in credit and asks if hes sure. We tested the system for like 10 min so he had time to think it over. He said yes and picked out a game to buy with the money. Then I bought it when my shift was over like any normal person.

Just because I have knowledge dosent mean im going to share it somone, esp. someone who dosent care about the item in question. He had tape all over it and thats probably the only thing that kept the plastic of the case in tact and from damage.

This is no diffrent then finding a gem of a old car for sale cheap and buying it rather then telling the owner its worth 10x his asking price. Its not my job to educate people who dont do their research. He knew it was LE cause he said so over the phone. If he would have looked online for 10 min he would have found its true value.

In all fairness, since he works for Gamestop (I'm assuming), and since his manager was there, its kinda against the rules for him to divert a trade-in away from the store. Like, his job is to get people to trade their junk in so Gamestop can make free money off of it. Telling people, "Well, I'll give you more for it..." is a BIG no-no. MANAGERS have lost their JOBS over it even.

Now, on the other hand, sure, he could've said, "Hey kid, that thing is worth way more than that and you can sell it on ebay and blah blah blah," but I can almost assure you the kid would be like, "Na, I'll just trade it in here," because for every day shmoes, selling their shit online as opposed to getting peanuts for it at Gamestop is just too much of a hassle.

Well, I personally want to say, good for you. :icon_bigg Its not everyday that such a lucky find walks right up to you. I dont think you did anything wrong. I am sure you were excited when composing this post, and I think everyone just mistook your wording for, "Oh, this guy just wanted to rip off the kid so he could take it himself."

    Just saying is all. :katamari:

I bought and had one shipped from the USA last year for a total of $50 (including S&H), when I found a badly listed one (Green Xbox) on eBay ;-). In order to get the full $250 value it would have to be minty fresh, unopened and boxed in the original packaging (almost identical to the retail Xbox pack, but with a large green sticker on it).

As for ripping the kid off! Hmmmm, I remember as a kid someone taking advantage of me like that and it stung when I realised years later just how stung I had been. However, my bet is the kid got the console for free and wanted 'any' cash what-so-ever to put into something else! Stores give you bollocks value for your consoles anyway. Had he wanted a better return he should have tried eBay.

Treat others as you would want to be treated.

Do you know how many people IM each day me asking for advice on sales, trades, or prices?

We have hundreds of daily users. I tell them all, down to the very last person the truth,
even if it means losing something I want.

    "How much is that worth"

"We only give twenty bucks, but that's a special edition you have there and you should probably ebay it"

    "Cool man, thanks a lot"

    "No problem"

I will say no more, except I am very disappointed by what I am reading.

It is a tough call. It's the sellers responsibility to know what exactly he is selling. In ths day and age of the internet it is not that difficult to at least get a general idea of what most things are worth. I don't think you were technically in the wrong.

On the other hand if it were me personally then I'd have probably hinted that he should do some research on it without outright telling him. It he still wanted to sell it or came back later then so be it.

P.S. You did tell your employer of the true value of the item? It might not have been your responsibility to tell the seller but it was to tell your employer since you were on the clock at the time.
