My friend is going to machine a base for a "Third Hand", what shape should I go with?

I have a friend that still has access to a machine shop and will make a couple of bases for a custom "Third Hand". The ones I found seemed cheaply made and I'd rather make one myself anyway. All he has to do is put the block in and hit enter, so I'll have him make a couple extra. I'll even give a couple away on here for those that help pic the final design or to anyone who really really wants one.

    It'll be something like this...

What design should I go with? How many attachments, what kind of attachments, or anything else you think it should have. The only thing I for sure want is a little lip in the base like the one in the picture, or even a couple dividers for sorting different screws.

    That's a great idea!

Personally, I'd go with something like this:

A couple of shallow areas to collect odds and ends, for sure. If you're sourcing parts, cut out a slot for a small magnet to collect screws as you work.

Screw holes on either end just in case you decide to mount it to a working surface down the road.

Multiple attachment points like above are a good idea, gives you room to change things around for odd shaped work. Design it roughly like an upsidedown headcrab (and that works as the name for it, too :] ), with an alligator clip arm (4 total) on each corner. You'll want it large enough that it won't easily tip when the clips are loaded. Then, additional attachment points at the center of each side (so 8 total, including corner attachment points), with a long arm for a small led light source, and a long arm for a magnifying glass.
