I wonder if anyone knows why or has had this happen. I have a GB cart from Brazil that I picked up a while back. It has some awesome games on it like Ninja Gaiden, Bat Man, Contra, ect. I put it in my Gameboy console but I can only hear the noise, can't see the screen really. But when I put the same game on my Super Game boy to be played on the SNES, it works perfectly. Anyone know what this could be or anyone have had this same problem before? I'm very curious.
I actually was testing it on my GBC and GBA. I don't have an original GB to test it on. I have a lot of pirated games and this is the only one that has this problem. I also have another pirated cart that works only in my Game Boys but does NOT work when in the Super Game Boy player.
here's a couple photos to show you how the games look when inserted in the GBA SP. Does the same thing in the GBC. It's so weird that it works just fine on the SNES Super Game Boy player but not in the game boys themselves. IMG_5757 by Y=MX+B, on Flickr
A wild guess, but maybe the GBC's (and in turn GBA in GBC mode's) colorization feature for monochrome games doesn't work right with the cartridge? Try changing the palette while the cartridge starts up, I believe by holding down a direction on the D-pad (and/or A or B?) during the Nintendo logo, and see if that makes the games any more playable.
I tried that and it's not working. I'm guessing maybe it only works on an original Game Boy, which I do not have. Perhaps one day
When you turn on the GBC/GBA, while the "GAME BOY" logo is still being displayed, what happens when you push the control pad (+) in any direction? Does the background color change while the "GAME BOY" logo is on screen? If NOT, that means the cartridge has broken header data that will force a Game Boy Color palette which is actually not present on the cartridge. The Super Game Boy does not check for Game Boy Color palettes, so the issue would not occur there. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do.
A lot of pirate carts are made purely for the DMG Gameboy, which is why you're seeing errors. I believe the Super Gameboy cart has actualy Gameboy hardware inside, hence why it's working.
Ok so I tried again and no color change happens when I hold the D-pad during start up. Must have the broken header you mentioned. If that's the case, do you believe it'll work in a regular Game Boy? I'm learning a lot from you guys. I didn't even know until today about the holding the D-pad while starting the game to change color pallet. I tried that with a few other games and it worked. That's pretty awesome
The reason it doesn't work may be because when the BIOS reads for the Nintendo Logo data the cartridge is programmed to know that the original GB and Super GB read this data twice. What they do is return two different sets of data so that the Nintendo Logo is different. The problem is this won't work on a Color Gameboy (and the GBA has a Color Gameboy hardware set so it won't work either) because the BIOS reads the data differently. There is nothing you can do unless you want to try to reverse engineer the device. I'm not 100% sure this is your problem but it seems very likely since it works on the Super GB but not the GBA. Other pirate carts have this same problem because of their logo deception.
Pretty crazy. Yeah I don't know a whole lot about this stuff but it's nice to be learning. I'll try it out on an original GB some day when I get one
yeah they aren't too expensive here either, I just have some other things I'd like to get before getting another game boy. My wife might get mad if I keep buying games hahaha
You should get a GB Pocket. Smaller and better screen than the original GB, uses fewer batteries too.
