Memory usage is out of control. 6 months ago I was having frequent out of memory crashes on my 512MB XP system so I upgrade to 1GB, within a week it was crashing again, I am now running it on 4GB of ram and it is STILL crashing due to wasting ram. I would have ditched this years ago but I have many bookmarks that have Japanese text in their names. I can not for the life of me find an extractor capable of retaining the Japanese names.

Just visit the link, copy the full URLs in a txt file. Also, most browsers have the option to import bookmarks from other browsers when you install them.

Well 1GB RAM is barely minimal now. My dad's PC was my first PC I ever bought with my own money, it was XP 512MB and it was struggling a year ago.

It's probably best you start considering to upgrade...

    ...but tokimemofan has 4GB

Did this start happening out of the blue? Assuming you're positive this is Firefox's fault, I'd check your extensions/plugins and remove anything you aren't using and make sure the rest are up to date.

Ah shit, I missed that... Well Firefox has always been a heavy program though. Should definately check out the extensions and also your startup programs on boot, something is chewing up your RAM.

For me it depends on how long firefox has been running for. I usually leave it open until it crashes which usually takes about 3 - 4 weeks. Usually it is approaching 4GB of ram at the time. Lot's of tabs running flash will make it much sooner.

Not practical to do them 1 at a time, I have thousands of them to move, The import bookmarks options usually corrupt Japanese text so that is not an option either.
It just gets worse overtime, firefox.exe will usually hog 2+ gb of ram after an hour or so. BTW I actually have 8GB of ram but as I am running 32 bit so I can't use all of it.
I disabled flash and other bloatware and have noscript installed to keep javascript under control. those helped for a bit but only delayed the problem. My at boot ram usage is about 120MB.
That would be tolerable but usually a crash means that firefox will restore every tab opened in the previous session or will wipe my tabs, cookies and anything else that it decides to corrupt.

Use a browser that doesn't support tabs. Problem solved! All browsers now are resource hogs.

That doesn't make sense. How could a web browser use that much RAM? I just did a test of Chrome, and even with a ton of tabs open playing streaming video and other stuff, it only used about 100MB.

I know a lot of people like to leave 20-30 tabs open at one time. I don't understand this. If you have bookmarks (which you said you have plenty) it should take a minimal amount of time to navigate to the page you want to visit. There's no need to keep them all open at one time, and that probably uses a lot a resources and memory right there. Not to mention that if you have that many tabs open at once, your screen becomes a huge mess and becomes even more difficult to navigate. I don't know if that's something you do or not, but if it is, it's something to consider.

You could also try closing and reopening the browser when it starts to use too much memory. Again, why would you need to leave it running constantly? You shouldn't lose anything by closing it.

Not meaning to be insulting here but it sounds like absolute bullshit to me.

I have 37 tabs open as we speak, in multiple windows and I'm using roughly 700mb of RAM. I'd also like to add I run multiple addons and none of them are known for being particularly lightweight. NoScript, adblock etcetera.

There is also the argument unused ram is just wasted ram.

The length of time is usually the biggest factor for me. I actually had Firefox just crash. Had 197 tabs open and was using 2.5 GB of ram. Probably half of them were active. Which is one nice thing about firefox is that when I reload it doesn't reload every tab I have open but still shows it as available. (I basically use tabs instead of bookmarks.)

I had been a loyal user of Firefox for exactly 10 years, from 2004 until 2014 before I finally switched to Chrome. I initially thought that it's just my MacBook's RAM that is insufficient and drags down browser performance massively, but apparently it was just because Firefox is a heap of shit these days. Whenever I still use Firefox (mainly to grab videos from sites other than YouTube - I still haven't found a satisfactory solution for Chrome!), it's pure torture. Takes forever to load, freezes all the time and even crashes regularly. Then I open Chrome right afterwards, which has exactly the same bookmarks and lots of addons, and it runs like a charm.

It is a bit of a hassle to import all the bookmarks and features and I still haven't found good solutions for some of the Firefox addons (especially the video grabber). But the speed is absolutely fantastic compared to Firefox. I really don't know what's wrong with them... well, their CEO was a homophobic asshole, so I feel good about switching on multiple levels.

Memory leaks are the problem of all browsers, especially if there's some shi... plugins like flash plugin are involved. Best way is to close browser every day.

I run Firefox on Linux and i works just fine. Yes, it does take a bit more memory than Chrome, but in terms of being stable it's just fine. It never takes down my system or anything like that. I recently updated to the bleeding edge Firefox (Beta) and it runs faster than it did before (at least for me) so I'm pretty satisfied.
