From Facebook a few minutes ago (yeh that is probably why this sounds so stupid): I ask for a citation which is responded to with this: My citations: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_dea_fro_can-health-death-from-cancer http://www.wcrf-uk.org/research/cancer_statistics/world_cancer_statistics_overall.php Upon that being pointed out she "clarifies": Upon having it pointed out what she said in the first place: So it is OK to make claims, tell other people that they need to find citations for your claims, attempt to revise post-facto, and then throw it in their face when it is reveleaed that they are ridiculously ignorant about topics they claim to know something about using their status as a nursing student as leverage. I hope none of you ever end up at a hospital in the Bay Area.
Don't tell me she's one of those people who believes the conspiracy theories about fluoridated water...
People hate to admit they are wrong, generally these are stupid people. Still America has the highest obesity rate in the world as well as the highest number of motor vehicle deathes per 100,000 people. Although remember when someone mentions Hitler or Nazis then the thread has ended.
I usually stay away from topics In which I have little or no knowledge about. That is why I never post in the development sub-sections. It seems that most of the time stupidity goes hand in hand with pride.
Had a similar argument with my brother earlier. He has left wing sensiblities but votes for a right wing party. Why, might you ask? Because he doesn't know the difference between the left and right wings... yet a whole country people sre out there like him with the right to vote... truly shocking!
I just don't understand why people think ignorance is shameful. I have ignorance of what my neighbor's mother looks like in the shower but I'm quite happy with that!
lol, how old is your brother? Yes, its shoking indeed, at Brazil the things are like they are because of that kind of things -.-'
It's one thing to be ignorant, but it's another to falsely claim that you have knowledge of something when you really don't. Another trend is that some people are proud of their ignorance; that's a key American value, I think.
I'm sure I'm not the only one to encounter this mentality on the internet but I've been encountering it more and more often in reality where people almost get violent over their belief that this is acceptable. Usually those who know they are ignorant stay quiet for fear of being seen as stupid but, as mentioned above, it seems ignorance is viewed as nearly a virtue these days. A badge of honor that even congress seems to have no problem announcing during the SOPA and PIPA "debates".
Hell I witness this at The Reason Rally in DC,I saw the Westboro Baptist protesting with there all mighty god hates fags signs.
The fact one is studying or even graduated in a field of study doesn't mean he/she knowledgeable, smart or competent I'm in my last semester of Electrical Engineering (only 3 day left!!! ) and I'm just amazed to see the number of people who after 4 year of study, know nothing at all when it come to do real stuff. Also seeing that so many people don't even got a soldering iron at home make me wonder WTF they are doing in that field of study.....
That country is well into a collapse. Isn't there something like a $70 trillion debt by now? I've been down recently. By all means I'm not generalizing the entire population, but, there is a shocking amount of obese people.
I've spoken to a few others that have gotten CS or EE degrees and it seems soldering isn't something covered by classes at all. At best they touch on topics of tolerances and machine machines handle surface mount work but nothing on hand reworking which seems to me like something rather important when building prototypes. The US? $7 trillion or so. And yes there are a shockingly high number of obese to morbidly obese individuals down here in Canada's pants. Canada and the UK are catching up rather quickly sadly.
I work in IT and see loads of graduates thinking they have a clue what they are talking about. They don't. "You might have a degree, but please don't touch anything" is my usual response.
Yeah it's not, but one in EE should in my opinion has the curiosity to build some stuff at home on their own.
Sorry, my bad. Added in an extra 0 in 7 trillion:biggrin-new: On the note of people with degrees- A friend runs a mass spectrometry lab in a University. There are the occasional epople asking for her to run samples and find out things about it. Point is, I've heard stories of the US sending samples of either the wierdest "shit" (literally) or they aren't happy with the results they got because the sample that was sent just doesn't yeild those results. So much for people with degrees.
