I've been making music for a long time now, but only yesterday I decided to put a bunch of it up on Myspace Music. I'd love some feedback. Keep in mind that most of what I have posted are little more than demos, with a minimal amount of polish. http://www.myspace.com/gardenvarietyarsonist
I does it too I like whats there, but it's so raw it hurts... (I'm the sort of guy that winces when one of the 40 violins in the orchestra is off a little ) If you've got the money to plop on a good studio suit and VSTs, you'd be able to clean your sound up a lot. I've been writing music myself on and off for a little under 10 years. WARNING: there is no volume knob on the embedded player I use on my blag, and a lot of the music is either too quiet or really f'en loud. http://captainrhythm.blogspot.com/2009/10/this-post-is-in-response-to-message.html Most of it is what you'd call "shit," and, besides the shit, you'll find anything worth listening to is mixed horridly-- I'm no good at mastering at all. But, I do it for fun.
I just found this thread so have been giving your tracks a listen; I'm really liking them. Some of them remind me my early recordings (that's a good thing ); especially "Pavlov". It is very "raw", as captainr mentioned - but he I doubt he meant it as an insult. I certainly don't. It sounds a little dischordant and "made-up-on-the-spot" in places - mainly the second/lead guitar tracks. It also sounds like you played a few wrong notes, but didn't bother to re-record them. Which is fine; I do the same thing. They're demos and they do the job fine. Is there anywhere we can download these in OGG/MP3? I don't like having to listen through MySpace. Favourites: "Pillows Hurt", "Hole Puncher" and "Twice Lucky". I'd move those up the list, so they get more listens. Good stuff, dude.
Raw means the Mixing and mastering haven't been implemented and/or are poorly done. Which it is. You should learn how to mix(plenty of free tutorials). And invest in some VST's and a DAW The music has potential, I can see it being pretty good Alt-rock/punk (not that I listen to band music much anyway) If you really sit down and try to learn mixing and invest in the right things you can get good results. Some of the playing is a bit rough as well. Multiple takes is your friend there.
