My PS1 doesnt want to read discs (CD-R) and makes a weird buzzing noise and the screen flickers. I have never had the problem with the flickering and buzzing before but I did have the problem where it didnt want to read discs.I took it apart and checked is the mod-chip soldered in properly but it was covered up with that plate. All the wires are soldered on to the board correctly. Then I tried to turn it upside-down but it didnt even try. It didnt go onto the PS logo. On the side it worked but it froze on the opening FMV and there was no video and the audio was choppy. (The game I tried was Pepsi Man) Now I have the issue with the buzzing noise and the flickering but, it only does it when the drive is on. My model it the SCPH-7502 (The 2 doesnt matter,if you dont know, its for the region.)
Are you trying to play a burned CD or the original game ? You should try it first with an original game. If the problems still continue, try to take out the whole laser assembly and clean it. If it's still like this, then just buy a new laser. They cost about $10 from ebay.
I dont have an original disc to try it on. It might be the fault of the mod-chip,but that doesnt solve my problem with the flickering and buzzing when the drive is reading discs. It might be the drive motor failing. I will try to take it apart again and clean the thing, the motor might be clogged and is taking too much power and the other components arent getting enough power and that is causing the flickering and buzzing.
The laser might need a re-calibration to read the burnt CD's. Kinda reminds me of my chipped GameCube. In order for burnt Mini DVD's to run the laser needed some adjustment to read them properly.
What do you mean by re-calibration? And I possibly need a new motor for the assembly because I think its worn.
On every laser there is a little potentiometer, it'll look like a screw. Its on the side of the laser where the ribbon cable starts. If you turn it about 1/8th of a turn or less, and try a game, you might see results.
Have you tried cleaning the laser with a Q-Tip (cotton swab) and the highest % rubbing alcohol you have? That did the trick for my friend's PS2 which wouldn't read games. If you haven't already tried turning the pot, be very careful and don't turn it too much. If you do, you'll blow the laser.
Yeah, I've seen systems not read any discs to reading discs perfectly after a simply clean. If you do adjust the potentiometer, use a multimeter!!!
I dont think I have rubbing alcohol, and I couldnt find my small screwdriver set, which has the only flat-head I have that fits.
