After a few days of tinkering with a genesis I had laying around I've completed an internal power option. I'm not exactly sure why I don't see any of these around as it wasn't very hard. Pulled a ac/dc psu that had 12v and 2a so that it didnt get as hot as the genesis power plug. Started chopping things up and voila internal power. Added a the av mod while I was at it and put in a green led too. Played through all of sonic 2 and heat was never an issue even thought it's next to that heatsink, works beautifully.

Tell me what you all think.

The whole is the gallery here.
I use connecters in all my mods since it makes it much easier to take things apart in the future, or replace parts.
Right now I'm looking for a psu that I could put in that could run the sega cd and 32x. But heat is a concern of mine with that large of a supply.

Awesome mod. Im rubbish with soldering but I do have a model 1 with a busted power socket that I wouldnt mind sacrficing to try this out. What was the psu that you used?

Always cringe when people have a big gaping hole for circular ports, great idea thought always found the mega drive power supply overly bulky

wow, what a massive hack job..

I only googled this as I plan to add an internal PSU to my Genesis 3.

BTW, using a 12volt power supply will mean the Genesis' internal power supply will run hotter, as it uses linear regulators to drop the incoming voltage down to 5volts. The higher the input voltage, the more heat, so you should have used a 7volt power supply if you could find one.

    - Mains potential wires floating around with your AV wires, not tied off.
    - Power connector secured by nothing by hot glue
    - SMPS PCB just sitting in place, wrapped in... cardboard?

This seems like a recipe for disaster. I like the idea, but this execution isn't something I'd want in my home.

I hope the OP also rewired the ground and voltage wires, considering the Genesis is center negative.

Not quite as bad as Drakon's mod work but it's very damn close.

Is a nice idea but the execution is a little messy.

Its not "a little messy" there is no execution at all! The poor console was just murdered!

I plan to use a 5volt switchmode psu in my Genesis 3, and bypass the internal linear regulator.
I'm currently looking for a suitable phone charger power supply to gut, something 5volts at 500-1000ma... although I need to measure the 5volt current requirement of the Genesis before I commit to this ;)

I'm sorry, but that looks like a recipe for a house fire. Even my first modded systems didn't look that bad (or I called it a loss and trashed the system before it got to that point). You want to mod, that's fine, but you really might want to consider some youtube tutorials on modding and soldering at the very least.

EDIT: Also, whoever said using 12V will make the 7805s run hotter is absolutely correct. The 7805s are junk when it comes to voltage regulation, and already run as hot as an iron on 9V. If you're dead set on using 12v, at least swap them out for DC-DC switching regulators:

The only serious fault in this is that the mains and low side share the same MOLEX connector....
i hope that wrapping on the transformer is plastic and not paper as what it looks like..

The he wiring looks slightly better than most commercial mains things that come out of hongkong on eBay...

Use proper interconnects and at the least a plastic job box from RadioShack (plastic screws too)..

I'd also slap a ferrite bead on the low side output to reduce some noise..

at least OP used a safe PSU that complies with creepage standards ect

I'm going to do something similar to a snes.

I can say I powered my snes just off my usb on my pc and it worked great, going to use a c8 power connector.

    Internalising a wall wart?

pretty simple, remove wall wart from it's housing (most are sonically welded but the snes for example uses security screws). Desolder both plugs, the one going to the snes and the one going to the wall. Add some leads to both, fit a mains capable socet (IC8) and solder the high side input to it (what was the 2 pins for mains) and solder the low (9v) side to the motherboard..

He hasn't posted in the last few days! Do you think his house might have burned down? (I hope not by BTW!)
Yes by all that hot glue he's definitely come from that same school of modding as the mod master Drakon!!!!

    Google him!

I think it would be safer to use an external AC adapter. I'm not sure I understand the reason to use RCA jacks vs. the stock AV cable for composite video. Either way good luck with your modding and stay safe.
