Today was my son's 5th birthday. He loves games so as a treat I took him to play a 3D fighter in a smoking free arcade since he always asks to go. He loves playing Soul Calibur 5 on my 360 with his custom Power Ranger character. Anyway, he had a go on the latest Virtua Fighter 5 and reached stage 5!!

Filmed on an old iPhone 3Gs

When I read "smoking free arcade" my first thought was "wtf, hasn't everything been smoke free for a decade or two in most places?". Then I saw who was posting and just about smacked myself. California banned smoking in bars many moons ago and IIRC NYC is still having a fit over their ban.

I envy that kid, the most arcade action I got at that age was in bowling alleys. Helluva lot better at Virtua Fighter too, glad I don't have Live.

I only remember seeying one arcade in my life, I was a little kid then (also about 5 I think) but I wasn't allowed in. Now I'm old enough even that has dissapeared and there are none I can find... Sigh...

Not to get off topic too much but I think the ban of no smoking in some public places is bull shit. I don't smoke myself unless I go drinking and even then I only have 2 or 3 smokes. Places like restaurants, arcades, family places and so on I can understand but not being able to smoke in a bar is a joke. It's a place for adults to chill and socialise. In japan though, you can smoke in many restaurants, arcades, and of course, bars. You can't smoke walking down the street however, you can smoke outside and in shopping centers at the smoking point or in the smoking room.

Maybe I should have added that there should be bars for smokers and non-smokers.

hehehe, nah. I only gave him 100 yen which he got two credits for in return. The first credit took him to stage 5 while the second credit was wasted by some dick-head on the other side thinking he was cool by beating a 5 year old. that pissed me off because there were loads of empty machines but he knew dam well my son was playing on the other side of the one he chose. (machines are back to back in Japan). I couldn't really say much though because I was with my son so all I could do is give the guy an evil look as we left.

he's cute as a button mate, stage 5 on his first credit too! I can't wait until my nephew is a bit older so i can start taking him to the arcades and getting him into VideoGames (he's only 2) and is more interested in cars than games but just give me time!

I think I'll be doing similar to all relatives younger than me (and possibly kids in the future)
My worst fear is having a kid who's a PS4 (ha) snob and thinks that older generation consoles suck. I've seen people like that, and it's just... disheartening.
Those damn kids with their cods.

But on topic, nice kid- would've been epic if your son had beat that other guy!

What you want to do is get the young ones to play many types of games. My son plays iPhone, 360, MAME, SFC, Saturn, Wii (his own console with 2 games) and Mega Drive. He cares not for graphics or 3D or 2D. He just wants to enjoy the fun. He knows some games are old and some are new but he doesn't care. Fun fun fun is all he wants ;D and that's how it should be.

Now that is a well rounded child. One that doesn't care if it's 2D or 3D. Serious props.
Absolutely the way it should be, and in most cases the older games are the ones that are true fun.

What my good friends done is gotten his kid an NES, SNES, Genesis and a handful of the olders plus a PS3. He's testing to see if his son (really young) sees a difference and whether from free choice goes for an older game, or a newer PS3 game. Personally I'm intrigued.

His kid will probably just pick what ever one he has the most fun with. My son loves playing Earth Defence Force. Not because he can blow up massive insects but because he can go hiding in tall buildings and shoot them down. hahaha. He loves playing the likes of Turtles in Time because he likes the TV show (original one) and finds that type of game easy. We even finished Cadillacs and Dinosaurs together on MAME the other day.

Cool. Looks like your son is a good fighter. They had VF5 at the Gameworks I went to in Seattle. One of them was a Net City and there were a few other candy cabs, maybe Astros or something, I forget. That was a cool arcade. In case you didn't know, Gameworks used to be owned by Sega. I think it's owned by an investment group now, but they still have tons of Sega games.

They had VF5 running on a net city cab?? Man, it must have looked ass. Those cabs only have 4:3 screens in them. Still, very nice cab for older games.

In the states, do they put the Astro City cabs back to back for VS play or together or two players on the same machine? I always hated the 2 players on one machine set up. I could never get the right feeling of the controls due to being off to one side of the screen.

Two people per cab, or at least in my experience.

2 player on one cab always end up not going well, or at least it has for me. The only exception for that would be one of those light gun games for arcades. Being on one side of the screen allows you to focus on your part and hope that your partner isn't going to screw up.
For buttons though it's never fun.
