My SuperEverdrive failed for an unlikely reason.

Whew bit of a scare, thought my recently obtained Super EverDrive was faulty, set it all up, turned it on and displayed menu but anytime I tried selecting a ROM to load it just went to a scrolling RED screen! Much to my surprise the issue was actually.....THE CONTROLLER! No REALLY, see I had been using these low end generic ones that came with the Snes bundle I picked up ages ago (and I mean generic, they don't even have a name on them lol) but the thing is otherwise I have never had an issue playing ANY games with them. I have an original controller around but packed away somewhere but fortunately I had a nice AsciiWare 3rd party controller, plugged it in not expecting a change really, using a different controller was really a last resort but damn if it didn't load right up! Tried with a few titles just to be sure and everything is a-ok. What a relief! So just a warning for anyone else using an SuperEverDrive (could not say if it effects other flashcarts or consoles) but there is at least ONE low end cheap ass generic gamepad that will cause your SuperEverDrive to fail, so if you are not using original or a good brand 3rd party pad give it a try before assuming it is defective / faulty! OK now back to playing some hacked roms on my SNES!

NOW FOR THE RECORD I was very skeptical the issue was caused by a controller but I am telling you I tested over and over with the same results every time and using either one of my cheap controllers had the same result. So I don't know, WHAT is it about this controller that caused this problem? I mean I thought well maybe there is something wrong and one of the buttons is sending the wrong signal or something or constantly registering a signal but this seems to be impossible since I have used them for ages as well even now they tested fine with several regular games and even my Game Genie the ONLY issue they cause is with my new Everdrive for some reason. I was so skeptical it was not the controller (before I tried the AsciiWare brand) I was already getting annoyed that I was going to have to start asking around about what the problem might be and I was aso sure I would have to return it lol. So I thought I better post my story in case someone ever has the same issue. No these generic pads are pretty light, they were painted GOLD by the previous owner so I do not know if he removed some branding / labelling or not. So you guys can look at the pictures if you recognize these let me know.

I was quite surprised and was not about to post such a claim before thorough testing but I can confidently say it is FACT that my Everdrive does not function properly with either of these cheap generic controllers, maybe they are the only ones that cause this issue and I was just unlucky but once switched to the Asciiware pad it worked perfectly. I DO know on the Sega Genesis 3rd party pads were often responsible for blowing the fuse which would cause no controllers to work in any of the four Dreamcast ports. So it would seem that while good 3rd party companies like Asciiware do not seem to be a problem some of the cheap no name knock offs obviously are a little to free with some of the specifications and therefore go outside of some devices tolerance levels. I think 3rd party can be good just stick to known well rated brand name ones.

Exactly, never had any problems with, for example, Hori controllers. Cheap no-name stuff can just draw too much power or generate some interferences etc. It applies to USB devices too.
