Let me start by saying this game is way too short. I 100% the game in 12 hours. That's doing ALL of the side missions and collecting along with the main story. The differences in good/bad powers/story aren't compelling enough for a second play through unless you are achievement hunting. There are only a handful of different abilities that aren't very different either way. This game is also extremely repetitive... as in most of my time spent playing the game was spent doing the same 5 side-missions 12 times. And it's not like there is any substance to the side missions either. They have no story or compelling reasons besides simply powering up or getting a trophy. Taking down the mobile command centers are the only missions with a bit of variety since they have different set ups so require different strategies to attack. Unless you have the powered up neon ability; in which case you can just pick off all the enemies from a high vantage point. Then the story. It's nothing we haven't seen before. Guy is power sponge, goes collecting powers. And really the whole story hinges on the fact that the main character is a smart mouth. Had he stayed shut while the Main baddie walked away, he would have NO reason to want to go after her. There are a lot of questions left completely unanswered as well. Like why/how did the conduits return, how does concrete nullify your ability to use your powers, etc. For the powers there is so little difference between them. In fact the only difference is in how they travel around the city. Smoke is slow and only skips for very short distances, and you need to find vents to travel atop buildings. Neon can run up buildings and also run for short distances. Though you can power it up to infinite running for very fast travel. Makes the actual fast travel system a moot point. Then with video the major difference is you can turn invisible and use digital angel wings to glide. Cool but that's about it. That being said, since the powers are all pretty much the same for combat, the combat is extremely repetitive. There are only 6 bad guy types, with only two being a pain to take down. They are not hard to take down, just a pain. The neon ability adds a bit of fun since it has a slow down ability so that you can subdue enemies. Beyond that they all play the same. The last ability you get is concrete. And you don't get that until the final boss. You're supposed to use it after the game to 100% it. But I had already 100% the game when I got the final boss. So I didn't even get to use it. The bosses are also just pitiful. First boss you chase a guy around. Second boss you shoot some lasers (really isn't harder than that). Third boss all you have to do is time your attacks and its easy are his moves don't even hit you most of the time. The third boss was the ONLY good one. It has you jumping platform to platform as you can't touch the floor, it's lava. You're using jumping tubes to get to high platforms and the platforms change positions. It was pretty fun. The 4th boss was also too easy as you are meant to use your super bomb drop to defeat her. And avoiding her attacks are pretty easy. The final boss has two parts. First part plays out exactly like the 4th. The second half was supposed to be hard, but there's a part of the stage where you can hide out and she can never get to you, so you can just pelt her with projectile attacks until you win. The only thing I really liked about the game were the graphics, and the traveling systems between the powers. I though they were cool looking and it is fun to just run around the city. Beyond that I don't know if I can recommend this game. To a fan of the infamous series it's more of the same. To a new comer the graphics are amazing and would be fun over all. As the ps4's first real game it's a good game. Graphics wise it shows a bit of what the ps4 has to offer. But the size of the city is average, even by ps3 standards. And there is nothing new game play wise though, so it doesn't really tell me what the next gen will be able to do yet. 6/10
I beat this game yesterday and I feel pretty much the exact same way. My big issue is how fragile you are in terms of damage. Only a few hits from any enemy sends you into a warning sign and then game over (or back to continue point). Its not very super heroic. Sure its challenging but in a cheesy way. My favorite parts had nothing to do with the main plot. The whole city is set up like America's Homeland Security went crazy with military checkpoints and cameras etc and I found taking out those stations pretty satisfying. That was literally the whole game for me and progressing through the story was just boring typical current gen stuff. The city does look amazing though.
Does the city feel alive or is it sparsely populated with not much going on like most of the screenshots seem to suggest? I've still not bothered picking it up as I thought the first two were very average games.
The city has a paramilitary force running it to protect it from people with powers like your character so at first people are not walking around much or standing at security checkpoints. Once you clean those forces out of a district the streets start to become populated with more people as they are not afraid to go out. So you'll start to see a ton of people walking around a district. The city elements of the game are great and the best part of the game. Once the game is finished you can wander the city, clean out more military and do little side missions. I actually prefer these to the main story!
I have to agree. The city does fill with people. But what I never understood was how they would praise you as you walk by, but when you use your power they run screaming for you not to kill them
I have to agree about the side missions being repetitive: most of them are just variations on "go here, shoot something" while games like GTA and Saints Row and even Prototype have activities that are much more varied. However, I can't agree that combat is the same for all the powers, since they do play somewhat differently, even though this means neon is by far the most powerful and concrete is by far the weakest since it doesn't have a karma bomb (then again, by the time you get it there's nothing to do anyway). The story finishes really abruptly — after you get video, it's practically over — which makes me wonder if something was cut out due to the game being rushed. Overall, it's an enjoyable game but 10 hours for a sandbox game is pretty sad and I have no desire to do another playthrough to see the evil story since the side missions got old so fast.
I hope that it sells enough for a better done sequel or at least a competitor cus afaik sandbox games are all shooters now
