Well I didn't think it would happen. I figured my system was manufactured at a late enough date. I thought that even though the Fall Update was causing it to freeze randomly, it would just be annoying. But now I've got the 3 Red Lights of death. I'm not sure if they'll go away yet, but thus far it's still red lights. This really sucks because I enjoy the 360 quite a bit. But ofcourse it's no good when it doesn't work right. And I seem to recall they were saying M$ would have a fix just a day or two after the Fall Update fucked everything up. Well... it's been alot longer than a day. Still crashes, and now my system is red lights of death. I'm not happy, even though somewhere around here I have a Best Buy Replacement plan so I can get a new one. So anyone else around here have a 360 seemingly fall victim to the fall update?
Actually mine froze for the first time yesterday.... I restarted and everything was fine but that was the first freeze in about a year's worth of play.
mine gave me the four lights of death! i freaked out! Then i realized that if you haven't fully inserted the video cable in its bum, it gives u that LED warning.
Same thing happened to me a few months back with my original Xbox. lol *edit - To address the original poster - I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. My 360 hasn't locked up yet *knocks on wood*. And the fall update has seemingly worked fine.
The LED alternates between 2 colours if im correct. I think that might depend on what bios you have though, at least with the modchip it did so maybe the original bios's also have different LED combinations etc.
It's usually a flashing red LED combo if something goes seriously wrong on the XBox 1 Regarding the dead 360, just call MS and they'll sort it out for you. You'll get a shipping container in a few days and a new or repaired system in about a week after that. No hassles, MS support is really good.
Whats the date on your system? That sucks. I really hope when I get a 360 I don't get any of this shit.
Yeah, the Xbox flashes in some sort of combination. The situation I had was also when the video cord wasn't plugged in and the led ring either flashed multiple colors or the green ring of light kept blinking. One of those two occurred for sure. Also, I don't have personal experience with M$ customer support, but I know of a few friends who have had really good experiences with them. However, it sounds like it would be easier to just take it to the Best Buy and return it so you won't have to be without your Xbox for an extended period of time.
They're quite responsive, I can assure you. My launch day 360 developed the flashing ring of light issue over the summer. At the time, I didn't have the extended warranty and this was before they made the decision to extend/refund everyone with a 2005 console. So I paid them the $129 and MS promptly sent me a shipping container which arrived in 3 days. Back went the defective system and a week later I got a brand new console (a later manufacture date albeit with the same serial # as my old one). Of course, a week later they announced that all 2005 consoles would be covered with an additional 1 year warranty and that my $129 fee would be refunded. Sure enough, a check for that amount arrived in my mailbox 3 weeks later. Great service. Sony should take note.
My Console was bought on May 21st (2006 obviously). It was manufactured on April 11th. There is no error code, the system when powered on shows 3 Red LEDs, the top right one being the one not on. This is said to signify general hardware failure. But that would more than likely include the operating system somehow being damaged (from crashing maybe). I'm positive it was the fall update because the same day as the upate, after months of flawless gameplay, the system froze probably 10 times. That never happened before. Seems like far to big of a coincidence that my hardware, along with many other people's, would suddenly break down all after their fall update. I'm going to do the BestBuy replacement friday, as I paid for it so I could use it. Plus they will give me a BRAND NEW unit, not a refurbished or so called repaired system that I've heard awful things about. That and I hate waiting for things in the mail.
Back in the day, when the PS1 laser issue was hot topic, I had to call Sony Europe to get one of my machines fixed. The original warranty was for 12 months and I had mine for 15 months. The spindle was damaged because some plastic sections had snapped off and I was concerned it would no longer hold the CD correctly. Not only did they send a courier to exchange it over there on my door step 2 days after I called them, they also did it free of charge. I can't argue with that service. Also the PS3 warranty is for a full year.
It happens. Often. Send it back, get a new one... or if you bought it in a store that allows you to take it back and exchange it, do so. The good thing about sending back to Microsoft is that you can keep your hard drive. To minimize it happening, NEVER EVER put your 360 on the carpet. Always put it on a flat surface, with plenty of ventilation on all sides. They overheat very easily!!
Aye, and never accept "No" as an answer if something does go wrong. Most companies will do anything to prevent bad publicity and if you don't get the answer you want from the first person you speak to, go higher. Eventually you'll reach a manager who will wipe his/her hands of it and give you your replacement or refund, just to end the issue.
No problem either way. Just out of curiosity, what sort of "awful things" have you been hearing about repaired systems?
I've heard of people sending their systems to Microsoft and getting a refurbed unit that is already dead or dies shortly after they get it. I called BestBuy today while I had time and asked them how they do the replacement, they said to just bring everything but the hard drive and they'll take the one out of the replacement to put with the broken one, and when I get the new one home I'll plug in my old HDD. So I'm all ready for friday when I have time to take this back. I couldn't pack everything back in the damn box though. You really have no chance of getting every cable and that huge PSU in the box. So the power brick, controller, headset are in the box with the console, while the power cord and AV and Ethernet cables are in a plastic bag. Fun fun. I was just thinking though, if it had broken down just a couple months later, I could have gotten the new 65nm CPU. But I'm not gonna wait that long for a replacement.
FYI, this is how to check your error code: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=484726 . I guess I should have originally said "secondary" error code. Some 360's were manufactured pretty poorly, most problems stem from the setting of the BGA chips not making contact in some areas, either due to bad calibration of the machines for the newer lead free solders or from the cooling phase being improperly controlled. I don't know if there was ever a proof positive, but I think it may have to do with facility rather than manufacture date. While I agree that there may have been a correlation between the fall update and the failure, the fall update wasn't *made* to break the consoles. If your box crapped on the fall update, its defective and most likely suffers from the same affliction as all the other boxes and would have crapped out eventially, fall update or not. Sucks though, hope Bestbuy takes it back no-BS. I've had pretty good luck returning stuff to them under warranty.
The 360 was certainly not under the 90 day warrenty anymore. I used the product replacement plan. I had no trouble getting a new unit, kept my old hard drive ofcourse. Seems to all be fine now. I did sign on to XBL and update it. No problems so far, and hopefully it'll stay that way for years to come. I didn't know about the secondary error code thing. If I had I would have investigated what error it was. But you're probably right, if the hardware wasn't made correctly then it was bound to go bad eventually. But it seems all too strange that so many problems were reported at the same time, which was the time of the fall update. The only bad this is now I have to buy a new replacement plan to safe guard this one.
