I never had one nor have I ever seen one in a shop - I don't even know if they're any good with the games, so I m asking for your views and experience.

how many wheels were there? Was there any wheel-specific programming built inside the supporting games?

    was there rumble/force feedback?

I had a InterAct V3 PS1/N64 combo wheel (hell, I may still have it somewhere...) and it was... kinda crappy. Your standard cheap thing. Nothing special? Had nice adjustments and such.
A friend of mine had a madkatz one which was cool with it's shifter thingy but I don't remember if it had pedals or not, mine did. I'm sure his was even cheaper than mine.
    Neither had force feedback.

I'm curious to know of any properly nice (give or take) wheels that might exist?

I never mounted mine to anything, just used the "sit on it"/straddle functionality, and I hated that because it put the wheel in an odd spot in front of you, or if tilted back to adjust for the closeness, then it was at a weird angle, like a semi truck.

    Maybe this one's decent?

(that might be the PS1 ver, but ebay has some N64 ones in red). Looks to have force feedback, paddle shifters, everything one might expect.

I have a Concept 4 Racing Wheel and a V3 FX Racing Wheel. Both from Interact.
They was released for Dreamcast too. With different colors.
Both have pedals. The Vibration Feedback is power supplied for the Concept 4 and battery supplied for the V3 FX. Both are customizable on the run from buttons to sensitivity. Just read the user's manual for that. =P

Talking about the games. There's not really a support. Only Automobili Lamborghini and F1 World Grand Prix have some kind of support, maybe?

There's the MadCatz ones but I've never crossed with one.

    Meh, just emulate.

    RR64 + Project64 + any of the excellent PC wheels = crazy resolution high-FPS flawless N64 experience.

I still collect N64 hardware and software left and right, but I do almost all of my actual playing in emulation. It's just so superior in every way, and you can use a USB adaptoid (if you can find one) to use all original controllers and peripherals if you are so inclined.

The only thing I use the actual hardware for is anything involving the voice headset, which never seems to work in emulation. You know.....when I really have an itch for Pikachu VRS......which is like never.

I remember Nintendo Official Magazine (NOM) would frequently have a section about which steering wheels were boss, I purchased the Top Drive wheel because of them (I should dig it out to see if it still works sometime (bigger pic with cover missing is HERE):

It can be used with the N64, Saturn & PS1, stacks of buttons, leather grip, power steering mode and a slot to accept controller or rumble paks. Apparently the gear stick can be used but I never personally got it working with anything on my N64....although I don't think I have anything that requires gear shifts.

One annoying thing is that the pedals are mapped to analog stick positions: left pedal is the equivalent of up, right is down..which I never understood.

NOM also spoke highly of Gamester's wheel:

It has pedals which aren't pictured, my friend had one and it was pretty damn good as well, Gamester re-released it later on in grey and with a full wheel, too:

I'm trying to think of the games you'd play on it. There were only a small handful of decent racing games on the N64, right?

    True.
Top Gear Rally was fun. I'd even try MRC but I probably only like that game because I was so young when I owned it. Pwned it. etc.

Well. It's a matter of tastes, I think. That's your opinion...

For me, there's few non-decent racing games. =P

(But I like to play with the controller lol)
(and with Rumble Pak and Pak swapping if needed)
    (it's just that play-like-they-were-meant-to-be-played thing)

i got my fair share of love out of the racing games of the n64. MRC was a great game btw, and top gear 1 is ass, top gear rally 2 was really good though. World Driver Championship , top gear overdrive, Mariokart64, DKR, extreme G and XG2, F-zero X of course and quite a few others kept me busy:)

TG1>TG2? Well, I guess I never got to play second one... Or maybe I rented it back in the day. I remember trying to emulate it but it never ran correctly.
