I'll start with my end goal. I want to make a playable English version of "Wonder Project J2". The ROM patch can be found HERE. So my question is. Could I remove the rom from an existing N64 cart, buy an Eprom programmer (usb?), Eprom eraser, and correct Eprom, and the simply copy the patched ROM onto the Eprom, solder it in a cart and play it just like that? What Eprom would i need? What USB Programmer would i need? Would i need to cannibalize a specific kind of cart? Anything else i am forgetting? Any help would be awesome. thank you.
Basically no. For one, EPROMs top out at 32M, so you'd need 2 ROMs or you'd need a 64M flash (and surface mount equipment and an expensive programmer). You wouldn't want to even try fitting two 27C322s into a N64 shell anyway. Two, N64 mask ROMs aren't like standard parallel ROMs; they contain extra hardware inside for address latching, decoding and incrementing, stuff kind of beyond the scope of this forum and more than anyone'd want to walk someone through. You should just get a copier or flash cart and cut your teeth on some other project (hopefully not senseless game modding, there are too many "hackers" out there without any theory! You have to do the time in order to do a remotely respectable project).
