I remember this happening. Of course it was on my original model that came out. My current one doesn't seem to have that issue. I guess it's normal. Do you have it on a rug by chance?

get a third party expansion pak and play a long session of turok 3, and the thing is on fire (literally, the console of a friend started to burn!)

ok, this is mainly due to the 3rd party exp. pak, but yep, the n64 gets hot.

Earlier revisions heat up a good bit. The later colored consoles draw less power and don't heat up that much.

I remember reading the N64 manual and it said that the console would get warm and that this was normal.

hmm.. It's the fastest processor without active cooler, so it might heat a little, oh yeah...

    don't mind, it's designed as a toy, it's harmless

    nice piece of hardware... =)

I don't really think you have much to worry about. The N64 will only heat when you are using, thus you will always be around to notice if anything goes awry and overheats- the screen would surely start producing artifacts and glitching long before it would melt, surely.

As mentioned, the N64 has no fan, so it is cooled passively- the hot air escapes through vents. If you are really worried, then take it out of your storage unit when you are using it.

Mine stays sandwiched between two shelves (enough clearance for the top of the cartridge), or it gets used on a carpeted floor- no problems.
