I have been researching RGB for the N64 for the past few weeks. I plan on doing the mmmonkey TSH7314 rgb amp mod and have my NTSC N64 connected to my LED TV via a framemeister. I want to use a Nintendo Gamecube official cable (because I have read that the Nintendo cables had a special chip and produce the best quality picture), but I do not know which to choose from. It seems the majority of modders use the PAL scart cable, but I have also read that the Hi-Def component av cables for the gamecube can be used as well. These are very rare due to the fact that these were only available through online order for a short time period, but I have seen several on ebay recently. My question is which would you choose for a NTSC N64? I don't believe the RGB component would have to be modified in any way whereas the PAL scart would have to be modified. Is one better than the other as far as picture quality is concerned? Your input is valued. Thank you.

You can't use the GameCube component cables because they have a totally different connector and are supposed to work off of the digital video signals from the GameCube. So, you have to use a PAL GameCube SCART cable (which doesn't have a chip in it, only 220 uF caps for the RGB lines).

Also, I get the impression that you're confusing RGB with component; they're not the same but I don't think you'll have a problem with the Framemeister since it accepts RGB. However, the RGB adapter that comes with the Framemeister uses the Japanese RGB cable pinout, so you'll either need to get a SCART cable that uses the Japanese pinout, or rewire the adapter so that you can use European SCART cables.

ApolloBoy thank you so much for clearing that up. Yes, I was under the impression that the component was the same as RGB. I guess I will be trying to locate a PAL scart cable and will be sure to get the adapter for the framemeister. Thanks again!

I don't know if this is a PAL scart cable but it says:

    • Scart plug
    • Offers a much improved picture quality
    • Cable length: 175cm / 6 feet
    • Gamecube RGB only supported by PAL Gamecube consoles (not for JAP/USA machines)
    • N64 RGB only supported after modification of the console (see links section)
    • Supplied loose in bulk packing (without gift box)

    http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-k6-49-en-70-64.html

I'm guessing it is since it says "Gamecube RGB only supported by PAL Gamecube Consoles"

Also I heard that you did not need to mod your Snes for this cable to work. I don't know if that means it will have a much better picture without modding, or the cable will just work and have close to the same picture..
Sorry if I sound dumb, I'm learning as I go with all this stuff. I just started doing small stuff this year, like soft modding my Wii, and installing iso files and wads to get progams to work. I've never used a soldering iron or anything (Even though I plan to get one and practice with it before trying a few mods)

That cable will work on the US and Japanese large SNES. PAL SNES has different RGB signals, mini SNES (never released in PAL) left RGB disconnected.

It should have very close quality to component. Component was the nearest option to RGB with wide home use. RGB got limited to specialty fields.

That's awesome. I keep reading how everyone says the colors are noticeably better, even if it's just a small amount, it sounds worth it for 3.99 plus shipping.

I use pal gamecube rgb cable (nintendo brand) for my rgb modded n64 that has the same amp, you couldn't ask for a better combo unless your using a sony pmv or a framemiester.
