I have just purchased a modded S-Video cable for the PAL N64 as a replacement for my unmodded cable that provided a picture that was too bright.

It actually appears to look good (well, N64 "good"!) but I opened it up out of curiosity to find that it has only been modded with a single 75ohm resistor. The resistor bridges pins 5 and 7 on the multi-AV connector.

I was expecting to find a 220uf cap and also a 68nf cap too...

The only reason I bought this is because when I attempted the mod on another cable, the resulting picture suffered from diagonal lines.

I'm happy that the cable looks good, but can't help feeling short changed, especially when this website seemed to be recommended by a few people.

Would the picture actually look that much better with the proper mod done, or should I just be happy with what I have?

Any advice much appreciated, thank you

What model (and serial) N64 do you have? I tried to bridge Y and G on the board, but that didn't make any difference for the s-video quality. The colors should be pretty much the same as with composite and RGB. If I test with Mario 64 for example, the yellows are especially overbright and all details in the sand before the castle for example is lost. It's almost getting white, so to speak.

Mine is a PAL UK N64 Serial NUP14827260. It was bought in Winter '98 for Zelda (Good times :D)

The thing is, whilst I am very happy with the S-Video cable as it is a significant improvement over composite, I just expected to see a two capacitors as per the mods I have seen online. Maybe the caps could be in the actual S-Video moulded plug?

Anyway I'm not complaining - just purely OCD haha!

I bought the cable from Consolegoods.
